...that football matches are not won by simply putting your eleven most technically gifted players on the pitch.

People list lineups week-in, week-out calling for the inclusion of Martial and Mkhi, regardless of whether they've seen one or both players really struggle in their previous few games.

And they subsequently wail and moan and throw in the towel before kickoff when Lingard and Young are instead selected.

Football isn't so simple people. Look at Leicester last season. Look at Sevilla in recent years and Nice this season. Look at some of the incredibly successful teams Fergue built that were heavily reliant on the likes of Butt, Park, Fletcher, Brown, O'Shea and Welbeck.

Today was arguably our best performance of the season. Lingard, Young, Fellaini, Rojo, Valencia and Darmian all contributed to that. All players whose heads have been called for repeatedly this season.

The boss picked the right team today. They were prepared correctly, performed brilliantly as a unit, and in the main, in their specific roles. Credit to them all.

What was it about JM's tactics in the FA Cup game was it you found so problematic?

As far as I'm aware, post match I was maybe the only person to write about the tactics in any kind of detail: http://www.ja606.co.uk/articles/viewArticle/364890

'The Get Hazard by any means necessary tactic'.

People seem to forget that before Herrera was sent off, it was Jones who should have seen red earlier and a stronger referee could have seen us down two players in the first 40 mins. Not to mention Rojo's stamp on Hazard which was a red IMO and we could have been down three players. Our tactic was to kick Hazard, not intercept or defend intelligently but kick him.

Today it was new and improved for a few reasons: Press high up the pitch and asserively (not aggressively,Chelsea (and Hazard) did not turn up, Herrera (more suited to man-marking) than Jones, we were disciplined but with attacking intent. I mean Herrera marshalled Hazard today but he wanted to play (not just kick), as evidenced by his goal and assist.

3 main factors contributed to us winning today
1)rashford's energy and pace upfront
2)herrera nullifying the threat of hazard
3)the early goal

fellaini/young and lingard (the 3 players I feel should not be starting) all had good games but were not deciding factors or did not in fact do anything to day that makes me think we are better off with them in the starting 11 than the other options we have available

I'm thinking that message is for Jose. He has played zlatan in every game up top and left rashford to toil. Started Pogba every game even when out of form

My thoughts exactly

Everyone knows that sometimes you need to do a job which is why I told people that young and Valencia were going nowhere as they follow instructions well.

My issue with Jose is him talking about form but playing folk that play crap all.the time

I think some people might have misread this article as some kind of wholesale defence of Mourinho and his tactics; and it isn't.

I've mentioned him to give him (as well as each of the players on the field) credit for his work today, as I have mentioned him to question some of his behaviour, tactics and in-game decisions throughout the season.

My central point is aimed squarely at those who post "This is our best XI" lineups (when what they really mean is "This is a list of the most technically gifted players we have in each position on the field" and/or chuck a wobbly - or even just lose a little belief - when some of our less fashionable or stylish players are selected.

There are myriad individual and group factors that will be considered each and every time any professional football manager selects a team. The individual technical talents of the players in the squad will, from an holistic point of view, make up only a small part of the decision-making process.

Out of interest, which players do you think he's persevered with who have played consistently poorly?

I think he's demonstrated he's willing to drop players in poor form: Mkhi and Martial recently, and Martial earlier in the season spring to mind.

I think Mourinho was at his best today. We've seen a bit of a mixed bag from him this season: some great tactical work and decision making, and some pretty poor tactical work and questionable player management. Today we need to see more of.

I'll accept that.

Can people also accept that you can't read too much into one single match against a team that was clearly below par?

Absolutely. Agree 100%

Some people have gone as over the top about our performance at the weekend as others did about the result in the reverse league fixture.

And a season is (usually for us, at least) made over 50+ games. But this fact didn't stop people writing off our chances of finishing in the top four before the turn of the year.
