The Sun has wound me up with this apology

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-merseyside-39677539

I don't believe there was anything racist about the Gorilla comment and I feel it is a total red herring to the much bigger reason why this MacKensie article was totally out of order.

The Sun should be apologizing for a totally unprovoked and unacceptable character assassination on Barkley and the people of Liverpool.

Unless they do that, then they have shown that they don't get the difference between right and wrong in journalism.

As for the S*n, stuffing it as a sidepiece on page 5, might as well not have bothered.

It didn't even apologise for the comments about he city itself either. And not a chance it does anything unless so many people complained.

This is a thin I don't get, even commments on this thread about scousers complaint etc totally misses the much bigger point around the rag and the damage it does on a daily basis, some people just can't look beyond stupid football rivalry, yes Juan you.

My view and reason behind the article is that irrespective of what you may personally think of The Sun newspaper, it still does have a huge readership and a national and international (internet) platform that can and sadly does influence public opinion. It therefore has a care of duty to maintain a minimum level of professionalism. This article strayed massively from that, not because it was racist, but because it was an unjust, unprovoked and unfounded attack on an individual and on the people of Liverpool.

However poor quality this particular newspaper maybe, it still has to meet some minimum requirEment or it should be shut down like the NOTW.

And the reason their apology angered me is that by making it about a non existent racial slur, they have let themselves off the hook on the issue that actually mattered. Furthermore, by making it about racism they come out of it miles better PR wise, because anyone with half a brain cell knows that is wasn't racist. A useful disttraction for The Sun.

to be fair to the Sun - and i suppose someone has to be - the mayor of liverpool reported the article to the police for a "racial slur", and the police then looked into whether it was a "racial hate crime" (yep, the world we live in):

Pretty sure the original article was deep into the paper and only a few paragraphs.

Laughable that some people are calling it racist, fack all to do with his ethnicity.
--------
tbh didn't even read the article just generally how the papers work though

I agree about the racial bit though, I bet 99% of people on here didn't even know he had a Nigerian granddad, that was purely the rest of the media bringing it up to pile on
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I am not sure he does have a Nigerian Granddad. I have only read in any article about this that his Granddad was born in Nigeria. I have never seen any reference to his Granddad's parents being Nigerian.

He does, recorded saying a few years ago that he was eligible for Nigeria

News group have become too powerful. I find it ironic that Mr Murdoch has previously told the people of the UK to

"Vote Leave to stop yourselves being ruled by foreigners."

As he has been one of the powerful people in the UK for more than 2 decades, i find that a tad ironic.
