I thought it was holy water, or possibly a crucifix made of silver. Maybe even a slice of Garlic bread.
But the only guaranteed way to kill a vampire IS a wooden stake through the heart.

Oh and sunlight. Sunlight is best for killing vampires.
Silver will burn the skin of a vampire if touched and will slow the healing process but that is all.
To kill a vampire with silver you would need a chain of silver (vampires cannot break a chain of silver) and chain said vampire to a tree and wait for sunrise.

I thought it was a bucket of water, like the one they threw at the vampire in the "werewolf of oz"
