The Reason we sold Benteke

Evening lads

What a shocking performance eh. Predictable, one dimensional, lethargic and possibly a body blow to our top 4 hopes.

Most of my frustration however is with Jurgen. He played right into Palaces hands today. One big striker up top in the form of Origi caused them no problems whatsoever.

The frustrating thing was that we sold Benteke because apparently we don't play the kind of game required to get the best out of him. So what the hell was Origi doing today?

An isolated striker who couldn't win his aerial duals, couldn't bring others into play - something Benteke did all game.

I'm not suggesting we should have kept Christian because it wasn't working but today we played a team and a formation that would have been ideal for Benteke.

As for the defence, I'm fed up talking about it and I'm fed up of seeing our defenders constantly lose their aerial battles.

This is no knee jerk but I honestly believe we'll have to spend £150-200m to sort this lot out.

We have

Sturridge
Lallana
Henderson
Ings - long term I know

all injured, in a forward line capacity.

There was literally no other way to play today. If emre Can doesn't miscue from 12 yards out we are two up.

All over them but not enough shots.. a game to really forget like a few others this season.

Benteke sold but not replaced
Sakho isolated but not replaced

And this is why we have struggled at times this season...

Injuries have been bad, but that's another story

The only mistake we made was signing Benteke in the first place. He doesn't fit in with any style of play I can recall at the club since I started supporting the club back in the days of Paisley.

He just hangs about waiting for a chance which our defence helped him out with. Hes a very limited player beyond being a goal getter for a relegation threatened team. He's can't beat a man, doesn't have a great deal of pace and doesn't create many chances for other players. He's also very lazy when it comes to pressing the ball.

Having said that we made him look really good today.

Metro..u said it, we ARE to easy to score against. Have been since the likes of Hyypia, Carra and Henchoz retired.

Dalglish, Rodgers and now Klopp it has affected all of them.

Origi had a pretty poor game today but he wasn't alone. It would appear to be a safe bet that Daniel Sturridge won't grace us with his presence on the pitch this season, or, indeed, ever again.

While I remain a strong supporter, the mpression I get is that it's all over between him and the club. Could we have done with him today. Time to get a replacement. The problem is, who will want to buy him at our price?

And don't forget the foul on Coutinho that should have been a penalty. We want to eradicate diving from the game, but when a player tries to stay on his feet he gets penalised. He goes down he gets a pen, clear cut. So why are referees still doing this? It only reinforces the diving/entitled to go down mindset.

Are you seriously comparing Benteke and Origi based on height? They couldn't be more different type of players. As I said at the time, Benteke wouldn't work for us because his movement is terrible. He actually started better than I thought he would but he's never going to fit in, especially when klopp arrived.

His movement yesterday was brilliant.

Won everything in ther air against all 4 of our defenders, ghosted between our defence to score the equaliser and bullied us all game.

Origi on the other hand was like a statue.

If Benteke and Origi swapped yesterday the outcome would have been the same. Origi would have had space behind our full backs and high defensive line while Benteke would have struggled against the deep palace back line and midfield shield.

This is more of a headache for Klopp than whoever our forward is. Teams know how to play us and we can't keep relying on individual brilliance to win games. We were unbelievably one dimensional yesterday. It will be more of the same next season unless we find a way to combat this.
