Jones and Smalling off?

It's been suggested in the media that Jones and Smalling might be off this summer?

Would anyone be sad to see them go if so? I think both would be good squad players for us but at the same time I don't think we'd be that weaker without them as long as we bring in a CB this summer. If Lindeelof comes in that would give us a back line choice of Bailly, Rojo, Lindeelof and Blind. We may need one more depending on Rojos injury.

Is it time up for two players earmarked back in 2011/2012 to be the next Rio and Vidic?

Personally I'd keep Young next season. Reliable, solid player who is happy to be bit part and doesn't let us down when he does play

100%. Turned out to be a versatile player who never conplains, works hard and is willing to play once a month or so. Keep.

What's the Homegrown situation like like if we allow these 2 to leave?
----------------------------------------------------------------------

This is a big point.... not just with these 2 but if we expect Rooney to go... Carricks situation is unclear... Ashley Youngs only really recently featured

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Good point. We still have Shaw, Rashford, Lingard and don't TFM and Pogba count? How many do we need?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It doesn't matter how many homegrown players we have. It only matters how many non-homegrown players.

Of those, we currently have:

DDG
Romero
Valencia
Bailly
Rojo
Blind
Darmian
Herrera
Fellaini
Pogba
Mkhi
Mata
Martial
Ibra
(Any more?)

If I'm right, that's 14, which would allow us to sign (net) three more and register them all this summer.

Rooney, Young, Smalling, Lingard, Jones, Carrick, Shaw, Wilson and Januzaj would all be homegrown. Not sure about Varela.

I don't *think* any of TFM, Rashford, Tuanzebe, Pereira x 2, RoShaun, CBJ or Riley would need to be registered for the PL next season. All would qualify as junior players still.

Don't worry guys, I'm not going anywhere

I'd keep Jones, of the two... Been good, this season, and Jose seems to trust him. His injuries were low too, this season... to say that someone standing on his foot keeps him in the injury prone category is a bit daft.

He's missed more than half of the bloody season again man.

His injury often seem to be impact injuries. He is ridiculously injury prone.

I'd be sorry to see them go. I believed, and still do, that Jones had real potential. And for a while Smalling was our best defender. But time moves on, if we have, can get better then so be it. Football teams should be constantly evolving.

They are both very good players. But not quite good enough for where we all want United to be.

They are not alone In that critique, either.

Would lose no sleep over Jones leaving to be honest.

Smalling we should keep. He is a decent defender and our player of the season last year.

Smalling as a backup won't work. He's got to see himself as captain material at most English clubs. If we can't play him, we should sell him. Jones is a real conundrum. With his injury record, we'd have to pay someone to take him. Really shameful how this has regressed.
