The mysterious case of fellaini

The guy is excellent in europe but very poor in the league.

Well, it's actually not that mysterious - perhaps the pace and physicality of the league is a bit much for him at the moment. LVG once opined that the biggest problem for fellaini settling in England was that in the Belgium league, teams didn't jump high enough. Obviously he was generalising but I think coming from the belgium to the PL is quite hard. Have many succeeded?

Tbh I'd drop him in the league and keep him fresh for the Europa and hope he improves next season

Anyone agree?

I'm not going to blame Fellaini for anything any more.

I think he can be a useful squad option (although we could do much better) but he shouldn't be a first XI regular.

I'm not blaming the player because when you play Fellaini you get what we saw last night. Up to the sending off he didn't do much wrong but 'not doing much wrong' is not the standard we should be expecting. To be fair, out of all our players, I'd say he is one of those who most often plays near to their maximum ability. I won't slate him for that. The fact he gets picked is down to the manager.

I would not have played him against City (I'd have picked Lingard last night) because they play it quickly and too often he was caught ahead of the ball (first half especially) with no chance of getting back.

I like the guy in many ways as he's taken all the stick and still come back for more. I'll never question his desire to play for United but I do question his ability for what we're hopefully trying to do.

Anyone who expected fellaini to pass a ball on a sixpence to rashford to run onto is a fool and the ficus should be why wasn't carrick doing that?
_______________

I agree that isn't Felly's skill set - the problem is that he really has no skill set whatsoever which means that, by your rationale, Fellaini will always be blameless and it will always be someone else's fault!

----------------------------------------------------------------------

That's not really true though is it? He has done well behind pogba and in front of the defence recently and offers an option up front if needed

Also Felly brings the ball down and passes it rather than hooves it like many yesterday in a panic

Come on...you surely know better than to talk about Felly's passing game...Not exactly a major strength of his is it?

Again, you say he "did well" behind Pogba but what does that mean? What did he do well that A.N.Other player could not have done just as well?

Or, to put it another way, what did Fellaini do that Fletcher, Cleverley, Bastian or Schneiderlin couldn't have done just as well?

So should people be saying "Jose out" or "Fellaini out"??

Personally, I think the latter makes more sense...However, if Felly is still a key player next season then you will be reading much more about the former too!

Fellaini's had ample time, 8 seasons including his time at Everton, to make the adjustment to the Premier League from the Belgian league.

Technically the guy is league 1 standard. Heading wise championship level. Only thing world class about him is his chest game.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
And his hair. Top barnet.

I can see that he can do a job for us at times but in some games I don't think he should be used. Last night being one of them.

Hopefully the manager will be able to address this next season and, going by who he's sold, I think it's an area he will address.

I hope so too, Diafol. What concerns me is not so much who he sold as who he chose to keep!

Look man I don't want to treat you like robb and VC but look at all of what I wrote earlier rather than 1 bit.

I don't want fellaini at utd anymore than some others and even when we bought him, and tbf some were singing his praises after THAT game against us, and I was saying nah he is limited.

He is what he is and done well in a 3 with Pogba and Herrera.

Sometimes its about team dynamics and you can't have a pogba a hazard in MF without a Kante. Fellaini isn't Kante by any stretch but compliments Herrera and pogba but not Herrera and carrick. Mainly down to carrick, being a rolls Royce of a player generally but turning into a Lada when pressed. Herrera also panics IMO

Should we get rid in the summer? Absofeckinglutely

Is he to blame for last night overall? No. Carrick and Herrera are the players who should have stepped up and didnt

Groot does not compliment anybody. He is not a midfield player.
