The new tv money deal

From the Leicester Mercury

Why Leicester City's final two games of the season could be worth £16m

By MJClayton | Posted: May 16,

You might be tempted to think that Leicester City's final two games of the season were pretty meaningless – but they could be worth as much as £16million.

The huge figure is because City could finish as high as eighth in the Premier League, or as low as 16th depending on results.

The prize money for finishing eighth in the table is £26m, the figure for the team finishing 16th is just £10m.

City are now 11th with 43 points and two games left - home fixtures against Tottenham on Thursday and Bournemouth on the final day of the season on Sunday.

West Brom are currently eighth on goal difference from Southampton and Bournemouth – all two points better off on 45 points.

But City are only three points better off than Burnley and Watford, who occupy 15th and 16th and have one game left to play.

However, the prize money is only a small part of the total money on offer with the huge new £8.5bn TV deal coming into force this season.

The club finishing bottom of the table will still get around £97m this season, which is £4m more than City got as champions last season.

This season's champions Chelsea will receive around £147m from the TV deal and prize money.

The team finishing eighth will get an estimated £120m in total, with the team finishing 16th likely to get around £104m.

That would mean eighth place for City would see them pocketing a massive £186million this season. That would be the £120m from the Premier League plus the £66m earned from the Champions League.

The Premier League money is made up of £38m for each club from the domestic TV rights and £47m from the overseas rights as an equal share. On top of that, there is the graded prize money depending on the final league position and a TV facility fee depending on the number of games shown

16m for two games. Beyond utter stupidity now. Sooner the bubble bursts the better.

Its hardly stupid to reward teams that finish higher up the table more money than those that finish lower.

To put things in perspective, just four seasons ago Leicester's total revenue from all sources was £20M. The numbers are mind-blowing.......UTF

2 million for each place further up the league isn't a great deal of money in the grand scheme of things.

I do agree that the difference of £2m per place is a little extreme considering how just one lot of that 2million could be invested by the FA, but I'm unsure of how that links to referencing 2 games, the additional £26m could have been gained by clawing your way up the table over a whole season, half a season, 10 games, 2 games- that's superfluous.

I think the money is an incentive but I would be revving them up by talking about the potential to finish as the highest placed English manager...something which wouldn't have even been mulled over 6 months ago for a couple of reasons

It makes it strange that some teams do seem to 'be on the beach' once safety is assured, a great incentive to play right to the end of the season.

I doubt the players have any bonus based purely around league standings unless it is around avoiding relegation, European places etc so they probably don't give a hoot

Leicester players definitely do
Because wining the lge last year wasn't on there list of bonuses
