Jordan Rhodes - Discuss

http://www.bbc.com/sport/football/39962116

So Jordan Rhodes, Sheffield Wednesday's on loan striker, a man who was once the most expensive player outside the Premier League, and on whom Wednesday will spend £10m making his move permanent, refused to take a penalty to help his club get in to the Premier League after a 15 year absence.

I would sack him. If you're the striker, you should be one of the first to take a penalty, or you should volunteer to take the potentially winning penalty. What an absolute bottle job.

This is overly harsh.

Probably deserves a bit of criticism, but to sack him and call him a disgrace? Give over.

Same guy steps up looking like a bag of nerves and misses and people say 'why did he take one then'.

Nothing to see here.

Haha yeah probably was a bit harsh!

He missed a crucial penalty against Leeds this year. That might have impacted on him.

More likely he didn't want to ruin the love town fans still hold for him! His goals and subsequent transfer fee are a large part of why Town are where they are today

Gazza refused to take one in the World Cup, possibly even the one that was missed. He wasn't vilified, and that's arguably worse.

Nobody would even be talking about this if they'd won the shootout or, if they were, they'd be commending him for putting the team before his own personal glory.

Think he did exactly the right thing.

Gazza was in bits because of the booking that meant he'd miss the final. No way he could have taken one.

I see both sides of the argument - I would always want our strikers to be able/willing to take a penalty, but footballers are human and have the same issues with confidence as the average man in the street.

If the shoot-out had gone further, he may have had to take one, and as has been pointed out he may or may not have scored.

Does the player who doesn't volunteer deserve to be sacked and called a disgrace? Not in my opinion. Does that also apply to the ones who did volunteer and missed, i.e. Hutchinson and Forestieri ? Of course not.

There have been much higher profile players than Jordan Rhodes who didn't want to take a penalty.

Thanks for stepping out of your high castles and your kind interest in the Owls but as Eric the king said - nothing to see here - take care of your own business.
