OK TRIVIAL QUESTION

I saw the last 15 of that game this evening.

So, my very trivial question is……

There was an incident where a Utd guy plays the ball forward, JUST AFTER HE PLAYS THE BALL, he is caught by a Falkirk player.

When the ball was played, it went towards a Utd player who was offside.

The linesman gives correctly offside
The ref gives correctly a foul

So, which one takes precedent?

The refs gave the foul.

Now for me that might be wrong as even though we now play on in offside situations until the player who is in the offside position becomes ‘active’ the resulting free kick would be taken from where he was as the point the ball was played.
Offside is only relevant at the point when the ball moves forward.

The foul occurred after the ball moved forward.

Now that is trivial

In saying all that the ref was correct...

If the ball was played forward first then, technically, the ref was wrong but he applied common sense with which no one will argue.

Maybe he could have given the offside and booked the player for the late tackle. That might have been correct but he'd have been slated for it.

Good decision.

A few years back that would have been the case

But now the infringement does not occur until the offside guy is deemed active

And the foul was before that

Hence why the ref was correct

But surely the player is active the moment the ball is played towards him, not when the ref raises his flag.

Not now he isn't

It's strange given the offside when given woukd intact revert to the point when the ball is played
No matter how long it takes

Don't think do...if the ball is played towards him and he makes no attempt to play the ball, he's not active. You can be in an offside position but not offside. You see it all the time.

But if he does go for the ball surely he was active when the ball was hit towards him.

Fckin love pub debates.

As far as I am concerned, whether the player was active or not is irrelevant.

Had the player not been offside, the referee may have played advantage, let Utd attack and not blown for the foul

From that point of view, it was still a foul, and any advantage the Utd had was over the minute the offside was given so the ref stopped play and went back for the free kick
