SIGNING KLAXON

Yes ladies and gentlemen, United have added their third signing of the summer by snapping up Tam Scobbie from St Johnstone on a free transfer. The former Falkirk player, who can play left back or centre half, had also interested the wee team across the road but chose the better team in the City of Discovery and understandably so.

I welcome this signing and I'm pleased we can now field a seven-a-side team rather than a six-a-side.

Elsewhere, the league cup draw was made and the big news is that the draw was fixed to make sure that Scottish football doesn't go another season without one of its biggest fixtures, the Dundee derby.

We've all seen how the Premiership has struggled without the challenge of United and, let's face it, the tangerine pound, so it was inevitable that the SPFL would have to do something to draw some interest in Scottish football again. They'll be thankful that the most entertaining derby game in Scotland is back and we've already seen the clamour for this game to be televised, with BT winning the rights to broadcast the showpiece game.

Elsewhere, teams from the Republic of Ireland have now been added to the Irn Bru Cup which makes it even more ridiculous than it was last season. The colt teams, which was a failure last season, will also re-enter. My distaste for this competition continues, despite the fact that we won it last year.

More good news for Falkirk.

It's good news for United

Spittal isn't very good. I'm in no way upset about this and would probably have been more upset if he'd been given a new deal.

Much better placed to judged than me Ivan but from the outside looking in I thought Spittal going would be a loss?

I think it's a decent signing for Partick in fairness.

Wieg - see if you only watched the playoffs you'd think he was good.

See if you watched the entire season before that, you'd know he wasn't.

He's an attacking midfielder who had gone 46 games without a goal before a strike in April.

He wants to play as a wide attacking midfielder but he has no pace and can't beat a man.

He's neat and tidy and I think he could adapt to playing centrally but in the role that he wants to play he's not very good.

He's one of those that might work better with a change of scenery.
Alternatively he'll flop there too and just become a journeyman.

In the end he was fairly average and you were never quite sure what he was supposed to be offering to the team.
