How we can win football forever

The Morata rumours, suggesting that we might end up shelling out £70m plus on fees as well as £225k per week on wages to secure his signature, have reminded me of a comment I posted on a thread a while back setting out a theory on why overpaying for players - on fees and wages - within the bounds of what we can afford might actually help us.

Essentially the argument is about disposable income and market manipulation. Here it is:

Every time we pay a huge transfer fee, it suggests to other European clubs with sought after playing assets that they might realise larger fees on sale than they had previously thought. For example, if we shell out £70m on Morata, Monaco might look at Mbappe and decide his going rate should be £120m, rather than £80m.

This repeated vulgar and sickening display of the PL's (in reality United's) wealth might push up buying prices for other PL clubs so much that they end up either not being able to afford the players they want (i.e. the better players towards the top end of the market) or being limited in the number of top signings they can make.

Similarly, players and, in particular, agents looking at the wages we are prepared to pay even 'second tier' squad players are going to then demand to know why they (or their players) aren't being paid enough by their existing clubs, and to use benchmark comparators to demand more when negotiating transfers and contracts with new clubs.

This leaves our competitors to decide whether they let existing top players' contracts run down or renegotiate and take a financial hit that will limit any further financial investment, and less likely to be able to stretch to afford the wages of other top players they'd like to sign (or at least limit the number of top players they can bring in).

In other words, if our obscene spending - provided we spend within our means, which isn't difficult because we are filthy, filthy rich - works to inflate transfer fees and wages across the European market, it might actually benefit us by effectively weakening our PL opposition, or at least prevent them from strengthening further.

So, is there anything in this theory? When Ed signs Charlie Austin for £50m or renews Fellaini's contract at £250k per week should we be popping open the Bollinger? Or, as I strongly suspect, is all of the above just a load of rambling bollox that has now wasted both of our time?

But mcnulty has the potential to be one of the best in his position, maybe the best in a couple of years. We will make the money back in short sales, as he's a very marketable player with his pot belly and gap tooth.

People don't understand that 850m for a non league player is the going rate these days.

Been following mcnulty' progress since he was a spring chicken at 29. Have a season ticket for mouldsworth's 1st team and reserves. He's world class.

Very promising player though and signifies a sea changes in the way Mourinho sets up our team.

We could end up paying way over the odds for crap players and then we'd be struggling to sell them on due to resale value and wages. Actually, this sounds like real life at Manchester United

Can he dab, hit countless shins while trying cross or can he miss countless easy chances at goal? Or is he injury prone?

Not sure about that, but he got sent off in a crucial game against Nuneaton village utd, after turning up half cut from the night before and spewed on the red. He did perform a sort of dance after he scored a world class goal that deflected in off a sheep. So he might be perfect foil for pogba. We often said, get a midfield enforcer to play alongside him, well, he spent years as a bouncer if the counts.

So do we give him release clause or police bail in his contract then?

No need, we'll be paying 5m a week to him. Let him sort it out.
