James Ward-Prowse anybody?

Still only just 22 and reminds me sometimes of a young Scholesy insofar as he's a diminutive character lacking in some physical attributes, but has great vision, positioning, short and long passing, and is a wonderful striker of the ball.

Might be a good investment for the future, and to the squad in the meantime to offer a different option or to share time at number eight when Herrera needs resting or plays DCM.

One downside is Southampton would likely rinse us, as firstly, they know what they have their hands on and are renewing his contract annually, and secondly, well, it's us isn't it?

I know he's not going to be a fashionable choice, and I expect some comments along the lines of 'he's not the kind of signing that would take us to the next level' and 'he's utter dross' (from one or two of our more cerebrally challenged contributors), but is anyone else a fan? I think Fergie would be all over him personally.

We only need a deep-lying CM whether that be in the Kante mould or Carrick mould, we need someone who is happy to sit in front of the back 4 and allow Herrera and Pogba to express themselves further forward.

Fabinho looked like the perfect option. Energetic, disciplined but with some Brazilian flair, plus can cover Valencia at RB. Shame there appears to be no truth in the rumors linking us to him.

Nah, seen quite a bit of him as my stepdad is a Saints S/T holder and he goes missing far too much. Has got a fantastic cross on him but that is literally it, quite a few Saints fans are a little frustrated he isn't really developing as they hoped.

Exactly this. He's not actually any better than he was 5-7 years ago. It's not desire, as I know he has that, but I just think, ability wise, he's found his level at a mid-table PL team.

A more sensible business plan for Monaco would be to sell one star for big money every summer and then continue to compete at the top

I guess the true test will be how they do next season with potentially half their starting line up sold

I'd say their plan is working quite well myself.

What happens if Herrera or Pogba (or both) pick up an injury.

We are bare bones in midfield now. We just about got away with it at the end of last season, but we need to add two players to the rotation given Carrick's age.

Constantly trying to shoehorn Scholes and McCann into the same team was Sven's downfall.

.................

In all the Southampton games I have seen over the last few years, and I have seen a few, not once have I thought, now there is a player we need to sign.

It was supposed to be a response to an earlier post about Gavin McCann playing for England instead of Scholes.

It lost its power, which admittedly was minimal anyway, when I neglected to hit "reply", thus decontextualusing it completely.
