It mainly has to do with image rights.
Apparently the foreigners sign image rights contracts with offshore companies to con the Spanish authorities by saying that the money earned from image rights were not earned in Spain so are not liable for Spanish tax.

Spanish tax authorities see it differently though.

I can see the players reasoning behind it. Why pay tax to Spain for money earned through promotional work you've done in Asia or America for example?

from what little i know PL footballers do exactly the same thing, though HMRC seems to be a lot less aggressive in chasing people for it.

Disagree, HMRC are more aggressive in the UK. But there are still loopholes with the tax system, which allow certain people to legally avoid paying tax in this country.

Does anyone know if Real Madrid were involved in Ronaldo's alleged tax avoidance/ evasion schemes? If so is he leaving because he feels betrayed by Real?

Probably most players would go along with it if a club said "we'll use a loophole to help you pay less tax, it's completely legal of course"
