Spurs playing the long game on Barkley....

So it seems that we're prepared to sit patiently and bide our time over Barkley and wait for Everton to show their hand before we make a concerted move for him. They've seemingly slapped a laughable £50m valuation on him at some point, but that obviously doesn't ring true as Koeman stated he'd be sold if he didn't sign a new deal. Sky are also saying that we'd potentially look at other targets if there's no breakthrough.

Barkley seems to divide opinion on here; some rate him very highly while others think he's average, I'm of the view that he's decent and has stagnated. He could still develop further but I don't rate him as highly as I did in 2013/14 when I thought he had top quality potential. I wouldn't pay any more than £20m for him and I certainly wouldn't advocate us waiting and waiting and waiting for Everton to drop the price so we can make a move. Hopefully the club have done their homework and have other options lined up. I'm sure I've been vocal in recent years about my disdain for significant transfers being completed late on in the window

Massive season ahead of us, no time for facking around or games of brinkmanship

I'd take Barkley but if I was manager, I'd be playing him from the bench because I genuinely don't think he's better than any of Dele, Eriksen or Son.

That being said, there are a lot of games so he would get game time but he has been very regular for Everton so unsure he'd be happy with that

Our squad depth is the main thing we are needing to improve and that's what Barkley would do for us.

Make a much better impact seeing him come off the bench rather than Sissoko ...

Barkley has a different enough skillset to Alli, Son and Eriksen to easily find a place in the squad, and possibly become a starter with any of them.

He has played in a deeper central midfield position, as a 10, and as an inverted 'wide' forward. There is potentially a top class player there, and his versatility is a fantastic trait to have

He'd definitely provide us with more options, im pretty sure opponents chuckle when they see Sissoko and N'Koudou warming up on the sidelines. I'd imagine that Barkley would need to think long and hard if he wants to join us in the year before the World Cup. On the fringes of the squad with plenty of game time at Everton so a move to us would probably hinder him unless Southgate goes all Hodgson and picks players based on who they play for

Defensively he is better than people give him credit for, he is good at shielding the defence and winning the ball deep in his own half, bad at pressing though. I would like to see him as a Dembele replacement, personally, but wouldn't break the bank.

Barkleys best work comes in the final third. One of the reasons he didn't get as much game time was his decision making and work ethic when required to defend. He should be used as a No.10 similar to Adele, this is the reason spurs won't go for him, he is not better than Delli

The fact that gormless mug Sissoko is earning more than Toby makes me wanna coat myself in vinegar and jump into a bath full of razor blades.

Make it rusty ones & I'll supply the spirit vinegar.

I meant in terms of defensive actions.

He isn't very good defensively, he runs about too much chasing players that he should pass on. So can't manage 90 minutes

Barkley does seem to go missing in the big games though. Whether that's because Lukaku goes missing or vice versa.... Barkley was quality at the Emirates in 13/14 and impressive at home to City that year, but he's been nullified easily in most of the other big games I've watched him in.
