£60-70M for VVD

You know what...just pay it. The difference he together with Matip could make is immeasurable.

Of course its a huge amount but when u consider the A carrol money and Markovic money which was wasted, well thats around £55M. Quality is better than quantity and VVD is a top top defender that would be a massive piece of the jigsaw that could see us really compete.

I look at aguero, ferdinand and rooney when they were signed. Superb signings and they were massive in their clubs winning trophies. VVD is

The more I think about it the more I'd rather get a cheaper centre back (Keane) and a defensive minded central midfielder.

Does VVD look that much better than Lovren did at Southampton? Not hugely. Good player no doubt and I think he will improve us just not overly concerned that he's probably off to Chelsea or somebody else.

If I was Southampton I certainly wouldn't sell to Liverpool.

You clearly haven't seen enough So'ton games. I don't remember the coach publicly stating that Lovren can be the best in the world or would play for Barcelona or Madrid. The majority of Southampton fans think that vvd was better than Alderweireld when the Belgian represented them. So why not compare vvd with Toby Alderweireld instead? Look how well he established himself for Tottenham. Lovren was never as highly regarded.

Cognitive dissonance in full swing here. Each and every permutation imaginable about how spending £70M on VVD isn't really spending £70M on VVD (it is).

Is he worth it, would we get our money back on resale? Are these questions relevant either?

Jurgen allegedly wants him, the other side is holding out for that sum; let's see where negotiations get us, better than last time, I hope.

My own view, for what it's worth?

He's not worth that amount of money.

Ofcourse he's not worth that kind of money, no defender is. It comes down to several aspects with one important one Southampton being in a good position where they don't need to sell him. The others being Liverpool knocking on the door AGAIN and the need for defenders that will bring the club to a higher level. There just aren't that many available.

Yeah it's not like fans and the general population to sensationalise ridiculously - it's basically the foundation of our society today.

He really isn't that good.

I think you are really underrating him here. For starters I can't think of a more complete CB than him. Kompany and Hummels are similar to him with the latter playing in a different league so it's hard to really compare.

Acknowledge vvd's consistent performances, strengths and growth potential and then you'll see why he'd do well for any club in the world. Would clubs really be that desperate for paying so much coin for a player that isn't that good? They see his potential.

Think of the Saints defenders that have been sold recently, Shaw, Lovren, Chambers, Fonte.

Have any been as good at their new club as they were at Southampton?

I'm with if anyone can on this one. I don't think he is that good.

Excuse me for not putting too much credibility in your view since you can't even explain why.

Why would you even compare those names with VVD? Shaw, Lovren, Chambers, Fonte have not been performing for Southampton on the level of VVD, that's the first BIG difference. Second, you need to look at each case individually. You can't just throw everyone on the same 'failed' bracket just because they shared the same position and teamshirt. That's just stupid.

It's likely that you've not seen enough of vvd's play to make a proper appraisal of the situation or you wouldn be able to explain why he's overrated without using the not so smart reasons I pointed above.
