Conte to surprise the PL yet again?

With the imminent arrivals of Sandro and Bakayoko, and most likely Lukaku as well, I have a gut feeling Conte will surprise us and other PL teams yet again with another formation.
I'm talking about the possibility of employing a 3-6-1 formation.

Yes, slightly different from the 3-5-2, but what this formation would do is to help us dominate any PL opposition...from Spurs to City, Liverpool and the other big boys.

Last season, even though the 3-4-3 was effective and a success, when we came up against some opposition, notably: Spurs, City, and even Mutd away, we were dominated in the midfield.
How we won some of those games...I don't know, but the performance wasn't so convincing.

Conte being who he is, wouldn't want a repeat of such deficiency in our setup.
When you look at other European big teams, what they have in common is to dominate possession, dictate the play, and create chances for goals.
This is what I strongly think Conte will bring to Chelsea in the next season...taking us to the very next level both in the PL and Europe.

So when you see Conte employing the 3-6-1 formation, please give me some credit for predicting it on here first!
With this formation, it will also give Hazard more freedom than last season to roam from left, centre and to the right, making it more difficult for him to be man-marked!

While I agree with what you're saying I would prefer us to not be so rigid with our formation especially with our forwards, I'd be happy if we change from 2 out and out strikers to 1 to using a false number 9 just so we keep opponents guessing.

I agree. I believe Conte has a masterplan of switching formations and personnel depending on opposition setup, and the situation of game in progress.
We should be able to switch from a traditional 3-5-2 to its variants: 3-6-1 and or 3-5-1-1 to our tried and trusted 3-4-3.
It will be interesting especially with the new signings.

The fact we are no longer discussing the old 4231 makes me very very happy.

Singing Sandro will allow us to play 4 at the back when needs be, the Bakayoko signing is growing on me I feel like Conte can mould him into a very strong intelligent player.

Technically that is a 3-5-2 with Hazard as the second striker (the link), which would probably leave Lukaku isolated given Hazard naturally likes to roam.

The two major examples of the 3-4-2-1 being broken last season (Spurs & United away) can be addressed with tweaks to the formation itself. The opposition didn't play exactly how we did, both relied on long balls and tight marking - they tweaked it effectively, whose to say we can't?

My thing is a base formation should be built to extract the best from your key players. Hazard is undeniably our gem, and the 3-4-2-1 puts him in the perfect spot on the pitch where he can do the most damage. Each individual opponent can be countered in different ways, some of which may require a change in formation (as many teams tried against us last season), but our current formation should remain the foundation unless Hazard leaves.
