now this isn't saying Matic is a poor player but why I think it would be a grossly underwhelming signing.
1. He's slow. Like really, really slow. Pace isn't everything but I already feel that our team could do with a bit more pace and Matic definitely isn't going to give that.
2. He's not really in form. Last year he was o.k partnered with 3 men and the year Jose got the sack he was terrible.
3. He's 28. 40 plus million on a 28 year old that might not regain his form is a lot of money.
4. Why are Chelsea so keen to get rid if he's good enough to take us to the next level?
5. I feel we are so close to having a team able to compete for the title and I don't think Matic is the man to solidify that feeling. A Fabinho, a Naingollan (or however you spell it), a Veratti would definitely solidify that feeling.
6. It's ridiculous how much sense Fabinho makes, he's fast, good in the tackle, can pass well and can cover at right back (which we need).
Now I know Mourinho has worked with him before and to be fair in his title winning season, Matic was unbelievable. One of the best players in the Prem that season. If we could guarantee he could play to that form for a couple of season I'd take him in a heart beat but can he? I don't think he can.

When matic first returned to chelsea having been sold he looked every inch the missing piece of their squad puzzle, but more recently he has struggled to replicate his best form.
Last time I saw him when he failed to exert his authority on the match against Arsenal FA in Cup final
Slow, overpriced, and deteriorating 28 years old.

I'd prefer Fabinho, he's more Brazilian.
But Matic was Toure's nemesis that season when Toure used to be unplayable, and Mourinho knows he's not a pu$$y

Matic isn't going to help us win the title. He's been bad to average for the past two years. I'd rather we not sign him and give Blind, Tim and Carrick used in the DM position depending on the opposition.
I'd get Matic if he was going for 10m and that's in this market.

Jose sees the position as key to his tactics being relayed on the pitch, he sees Matic as a quick fix to be that player, someone he knows and must trust to do the specific things Jose wants his DM to do and also as a player who can push his tactics to players on the pitch, organise shape etc.
He played well under Jose and his form hasn't been great since Jose left, he can slot right in at the base of the midfield from the off too I'd imagine.
Stupid money of course and while a good point was made above how fees influence each other the insane spike in fees is just nonsensical.
If Matic can get his form back and be the tactical player Jose wants him to be he could do well, think people are being a bit harsh and writing him off completely. This position in a Jose team doesn't require an amazing athlete (although would obviously help) its more about where you are on the pitch and how the team keeps it shape around you especially without the ball.
He's not someone to get excited about but this is a very typical Jose signing.
