I heard this question posed on a TAW show yesterday while they were discussing why we seem not to be looking for another CM if we don't get Keita.
So to help answer the question they posed this question.
Can and Gini are injured, we have to play 3 games in a week (I've picked the teams just as an example without looking at our exact fixtures)
Home to Everton, away in CL, Away to Newcastle
Who are your 3 starting in the middle for each game?
Do we need a CM

Only trust Hendo/Can in the DM role of the CMF 3 personally and with Hendos injury problems and Can not signing a contract thats the worrying part for me. Other then that we a stocked despite losing Lucas.
I think our strongest 3 is
Hendo
Coutinho Lallana
But its not incredibly weakened if its
Can
Cout Wij
or if Cout has to go wide
Can/Hendo
Wij/Lallana/Can/Hendo
And ofc vs more physical teams maybe we fit Can in full stop.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Don't see how Coutinho is now part of our strongest midfield 3 after playing a few games there to.
Whilst he's got the skill and range of passing, he will get dominated by most premier league midfielders.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Do you guys actually watch our games? how much of it is teams sitting back against us 11 men behind the ball with a defence that needs unlocking and how much is it an epic midfield battle deciding the game?
Vs the top teams our defending usually comes from the high press too so i don't exactly see what all these power house DMs are gna do anyway. And vs everyone else i'd rather play someone with the ability to unlock defences in from then what ever else you have in mind.
Just because its not our most physical midfield 3 doesn't mean its not our best.

I think Hendo, Can and Coutinho with Grujic, Wijnaldum and Lallana backing them up is pretty good personally.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Agree I don't think that's bad at all.
You have also got Milner as an option, and 3 young internationals in Ejaria, Woodburn and TAA.
Reminder that when we smashed Real Madrid and Man Utd in the same week that the likes of Dossena and Spearing got minutes.
Football is about confidence, tactics, momentum, not just 11 best players around.

Didi Hamann ✔ @DietmarHamann
Matic to United is a mighty coup for Mourinhos men.I think LFC missed a trick, type of player we badly need. Fee looks reasonable too.
Hamann getting a bit of stick off Liverpool fans on Twitter for that comment.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Didi was a top player but as a pundit I think he talks a lot of rubbish.
Matic is not remotely a Klopp player. He's immobile and doesn't press.
He's ideal for Utd potentially but he wouldn't suit us.
Didi is also a Tory which makes his whole existence questionable.

i dont want milner anywhere near our midfield

I wouldn't want him there regularly but he's more than capable of playing the odd game.

early stages of the league/fa cup is acceptable(i still rather grujic etc to play before him) dont want him there for cl or prem games, 2 injuries and im suddenly very nervous about our midfield

I think most fans would say that though.
Many Arsenal fans hate their midfield with Cazorla out.
I don't think Chelsea fans would be excited about their midfield if Kante was missing only let alone more than him.
Man Utd fans would be crying for weeks if Herrera and Pogba were missing.
Spurs fans would collapse if Wanyama and Dembele were out together.
Even City, with their embarrassment of attacking riches, would look hopelessly lopsided if Fernandinho and Gundogan were out and they had to rely on Toure to protect their leaky defence.
Fans like panicking.

You realise coutinho played in midfield during our last title challenge right???
Suarez, sturridge up top, sterling behind them, then 2 from allen, henderson and coutinho at the sides of the diamond with gerrard or lucas at the base.
He may have had better individual records (goals) playing further forward, but as a team player ive always preferred him deeper, he can still get to the edge of the area to score a goal, but he can also dictate play
He was further forward because we had no one else. if sturridge stays fit i see no reason for cout to play on the wing again

Yes, but as I said before!
Suarez used to take 3 players out the game by himself, he was absolutely one of if not the best players Aron then and it free'd up a lot of other people.
We don't have that now and I'm nowhere have I said he can't play there, I simply said I don't think he's suddenly one of the 3 best there.

Who are the best 3 then?
