Phobias

Off topic. Leaving myself open to ridicule here, but I have a massive phobia of driving over bridges.
Certain bridges are ok. It's the long spanning ones where you can see the river/land from a height. This has gradually got worse as time has gone on, and reached a climax today when I had to turn around and go home rather than continue on my journey and drive over a bridge.

It isn't rational, as I can walk them, and am not really scared of heights.

Anybody else have this? Any tips on how to overcome phobias?

Coming to the point where it is affecting normal life.

Any tips would be appreciated. Cheers.

Men afraid of spiders ffs.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I said I didn't want to touch them.

I'm not "scared" of Liverpool shirts, for instance, but I don't want to touch one of them either

One evening last year I took out the bins, and there was a huge spider on the wall of the communal bin area. It was like a garden spider but much, much bigger, the size of a house spider.

I wasn't too bad when I saw it, but for some reason as soon as I got inside I couldn't shake the idea that the monstrous thing was on my back or, worse, somewhere in my clothes.

I think I had a minor panic attack, stripped down to my underwear and stood shuddering and shaking for a while. If that spider – or indeed any spider – had shown up then, the fear might well have finished me off.

And now it's nearly autumn, and they'll be out again, seeking revenge for last year's fallen comrades

I have an unusual one. I have a thing about dogs. I was bitten by a large dog when I was a kid. It was pretty bad one too and never really got over it. Suppose it's understandable but I cross over pavement if i see medium to large dogs. Don't trust them.

Australia isn't as bad for animials as people fear. Lots of huge spiders, they're not the ones to be afraid of though. You're more likely to get boxed by a gang of kangaroos or killed by a falling coconut than anything.

It's not about being killed. It's about being on the same continental landmass as something as horrific as a huntsman spider.

No phobias but I absolutely won't allow anyone to put their hands round my neck, not even for massage or anything similar

Don't know why but it's the only thing that makes me literally lose my temper straight away

Must be because you are fat and you know it'd take all of a second for you to get choked out.

Have some

I know what you mean about a phobia getting worse with age.

I am 35 and have a 14 year old daughter with my teenage "party" buddy (not together now).

When she was tiny we visited a large city centre shopping centre, I was holding her and lent over a barrier whilst on the fourth floor, one of these where you can see (and fall) all the way to the ground floor.

Now I have never been scared of heights (still aren't) but a fear took over that I can't explain
I basically imagined her falling. Lets be clear, she was nowhere near the edge - I am no Micky J.

Since then I am married with 2 more girls and cannot go anywhere near edges or heights with them
I even couldn't handle the London Eye as images of my then 3 year old falling through the bottom took over!

I now have started getting it when walking down stairs with my 9 month old.

When I am not with my kids it's not there, roller coasters etc are fine.

Sorry for long post, just hit a nerve!

Oh and whispering, I absolutely detest it, there was a spate of movies trailers at one point where it was all whispering, it goes right through me
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm the same! My kids are forbidden to whisper haha.
I also hate loose hair, i.e. in a drain or just laying about on the floor.

To be honest I have a phobia for extremely fat, cake loving cants.
