In Robert's absence...

Player ratings:

DDG: 6
Nothing to do.

Valencia: 7
Got forward well. Couple of decent crosses. Wasn't troubled defensively.

Bailly & Jones: 6
Comfortable

Blind: 7
See Valencia.

Matic: 8
Pleasantly surprised at that. Did his defensive work, but also pressed very well and showed a good range of passing.

Pogba: 8
Very good. Thought playing next to Matic helped.

Mkhi: 7.5
Quiet first half but came alive in the second. Two good assists.

Mata: 8
Thought he was our best player in the first half. West ham really struggled to cope with his movement. Disappointed to see him go off in the second

Rashford: 7.5
Was a constant threat in the second half. Good assist for Lukaku's first and was unlucky not to score.

Lukaku: 8
Did what he was brought in for. He'll score goals, no question. A few times his general play was a bit iffy, but I guess that's just what we have to expect from him.

Martial 7 - Encouraging from him. Looked really up for it in the 10 mins he came on. More like LVG's Martial.

Fellaini - 6. Meh.

Lingard - n/a

Bailly and Jones were very good.. I thought. Didn't give them a sniff.

Matic gets a 9 from me... MOTM

2 - Martial is the first @ManUtd player to score and assist a @premierleague goal as a sub since Nani vs Liverpool in March 2008. Super.

I'd bump the cb's up 1... Otherwise spot on

Was impressed with everyone. Thought Miki was poor in the first half but really came to life when there was a bit more space. Matic absolutely stole the show though, what a performance that was.

Valencia - average but still being played out of position

Bailly - average (and possibly another one to be getting a bit ‘over –rated’ )

Jones - good

Blind - average

Matic- good

Pogba - good

Mata - good

Mkhit - good

Rashford - hmmmmm

Lukaku - good (as expected)

Subs

Fellaini - did his job, as he always seems to. However, he should have been sent on to replace Rashford, not Mata.

Martial - pretty much the same as the player he replaced, i.e. not really ready yet (fluky goal notwithstanding)

Overall

Good result, and fair performance, in that ‘difficult first match’ scenario

It says it all really when Mkhit, Mata, Matic and Pogba were all contenders for MoM.

With this lot - and the options (when available) of Blind, Carrick, Fellaini and/or Jones as possible midfielders - hopefully we can all sit back, relax whilst watching quality, well-directed, attacking, dynamic football and never see the likes of the pointless, clueless and directionless Lingard and/or Herrera ever again (I live in hope).

Long, long, way to go (to over exploit that cliché but better than expected - so far.

Jose, though, has to play his part - and make the right decision for EVERY game. The margins at this level are too fine for mistakes to be made as often as he did last season.

Thoyght Pogba was poor for tbe best (as did most around me).

Rashford was a constant threat, as was Martial when he came on. Jones was very good too.

Matic and Lukaku were the standout players for us imo.

Thought Mkhi was pretty quiet in comparison to other attacking players too, although I think he assisted a couple.

Thought nearly all played very well today, great game to watch.

Few questions for anyone who'd like to share their thoughts:

What was the point of making Carrick captain? How often will he play this season barring injuries?

If we play a 4-2-3-1 like today, which midfielders out of Pogba, Matic, Herrera, Fellaini, Carrick, others should get left out assuming no injuries?

If we play as a 4-3-3 (assuming Lukaku striking), which forwards out of Rashford, Mikhi, Mata, Martial, Lingard, others should get left out assuming no injuries? Should we even bother trying to sign another forward?

Are Jones and Bailly our best centreback pairing?

That was Phil Jones out there, right? Whoever it was, he was excellent, not a 6.
