DUFC 2 CFC 0

United progressed in the Irn Bru cup thanks to an incredibly dull win in front of a paltry crowd.

Just 1655 turned up to see a combination of fringe and academy players labour to a 2-0 victory over Cowdenbeath. That's our lowest crowd since 1974 by the way, and I can't say I'm surprised, given that it's our 7th game of the season where it's been pay at the gate and our manager was clear that the first team players weren't going to get a game.

In fact we ultimately used 9 players who had come through our academy, although this of course included Scott Fraser who is an established first team player.

Probably the most important part of the evening was getting minutes into some of the first team players who have been on the fringes, with the likes of Willo Flood and Scott Fraser getting full games, and importantly Paul Quinn played the full 90 minutes. Interestingly he lined up on the left of the defensive pairing (alongside midfielder Allardice) and I think that's telling - he's hopefully coming in for Edjenguele.

For those interested, the team lined up with Deniz in the goal, Briels at right back (normally a midfielder), Quinn and Allardice at the back and young Harvey Dailly, Christian Dailly's son, operating at left back. The midfield had Taylor and Chalmers, two youngsters playing on either side, with Fraser and Flood centrally. N'Koyi and Keatings started the game up front.

To be honest there's not much to say about the game. First half was a snorefest, with Cowdenbeath having a few good chances early in the game while we passed the ball about without doing anything. We scored twice in the second half, the first a terrific run by Fraser, jinking between 3 or 4 players before squaring for N'Koyi, who blasted it into the roof of the net to open the scoring. N'Koyi got his second after a fine cross by Keatings (and to be frank, apart from hitting the bar shortly afterwards that was all that Keatings contributed, he looked disinterested throughout), N'Koyi heading down and into the net with a header that I thought the keeper should have saved.

We then saw the game out without much fuss, with a few other youngsters coming off the bench.

It should also be noted that McMullan served one of his games from his suspension last night - a bonus.

So we progress to the next round and I'm hoping we get an away game so I don't have to force myself along again.

Brechin at Tannadice on Saturday now looms and I'm sure the fringe players will have benefitted from last night's run out.

Is that what they call the Petrofackall Cup these days?

It was a great day when Rangers won that one. That was the turning point, we all knew they were a force to be reckoned with and that we should be keeching oor breeks at the challenge they posed.

Only a few weeks later were second tier Rangers papping your bhoys out of the Scottish Cup

Your erse must have collapsed by then.

Have to admit a defeat on penalties was a sore one and I did think that a challenge would indeed come.

But since then ........................................................

The mighty St Mirren steamrolled into the next round a swell

Still no report from last sat yet

There will be when there is something to report on.

Shocking refereeing by all accounts and that Jim Duffy celebrated a goal so he is being grassed up proper

Any of the academy guys stand out last night Ivan ?

Not really to be honest.

Allardice played okay but struggled a wee bit at the start in the CB role.

Young Dailly did ok but didn't look particularly comfortable on the ball and had a couple of ropey moments.

I think Chalmers has something about him and had his best spell towards the end of the first half when he was moved to the left. Taylor didn't really grab his chance.

The boy Thomas came on late on and I think he's going to be a decent player - he's the one from Southampton.

I think there were too many who were trying too hard to impress rather than making the best decisions, and that includes some of the senior players.

Dundee is what Glasgow aspires to be.

Perth races will be a good day out though. Probably more fun than the, ahem, derby on Saturday.
