Irn Bru Cup - Colt teams dead

United have been drawn against Alloa at Tannadice in the next round of the Irn Bru cup, but let's take a moment to consider just how well this season's competition has utterly destroyed the credibility of the SPFL/SFA and their woeful attempts to justify colt teams and their inclusion in the league.

Last season we saw the Colts fail miserably in the competition, with Celtic advancing through a couple of rounds before getting pumped rotten by Livingston. This year they have had no such procession, being pumped rotten by Annan in the first round. Rangers were pumped out last night by Dumbarton.

The latter game is of particular significance so as to put another hole in the argument for including colt teams. We were told that including the colt teams would give the other clubs a boost to their gates. Dumbarton's average gate is a little higher than 1,000. The attendance last night was a couple of hundred. Indeed, Premiership side Dundee had a paltry attendance of 150 at their game last night vs Alloa at Dens.

Let's not forget of course that, after last years disasters, the rules were changed to allow for a couple of, ahem, mentors to play, older players to help the youngsters along. Still the teams were getting pumped.

The SPFL were obviously also hoping for a big, ahem, glamour tie of Rangers or Celtic colts vs Linfield or TNS to further the claims of Celtic to shaft the country and feck off to another league/competition. Thankfully they won't get that.

Get rid of the colts. Get rid of the non-Scottish teams. Give the competition back to the lower league teams. It's theirs.

Is this the league cup? Or the lower divisions version of it?

That'll be why I didn't know anything about it then

Does anyone really care, or pay attention to it?

It's like the Johnstone's Paint trophy in England.. had no idea what it was until I chanced upon the final on Sky one day. They were doing everything to bum it up but I couldn't even tell you who was playing.. it was that crap

The trophy in itself is largely an irrelevance but it does look like the idea of the Colts teams in it may have been the wrong one.

Still not against the idea of our development squad having a team in the lower league's consistently as it would enhance their development in my opinion but in terms of just in this competition it has been made to look rather silly.

Mind as a kid, stealing Bon Accord bottles off of doorsteps.. tanning the bottle and then putting it into the shop for 20p 😂

The clots thing could only work if it was a group format like the league cup. Otherwise what is the point. It doesn't exactly give them experience if they only play 90 minutes. What can they learn before the don't play it again for a year if they are still young enough a year later.

I like the idea, nice to see the Irish and Welsh teams take part and the colts.

Brings the wee ego bassas doon to earth getting pumped by mechanics and dockworkers

Not keen on the colt teams being involved, I would be more for junior clubs getting in. Actually find it more interesting with different clubs from the British Isles. That didn't stop me laughing at the Welsh giants TNS getting pumped 4-1 by St Mirren though
