The real reason we lost

there have been lots of articles on here blaming Lloris and Wanyama for our defeat, Wanyama was terrible should have been substituted early, Lloris made a blunder, but it was our inability to break down the packed Chelsea midfield that was the issue for me, we just didnt have any width in attack, Trippier I take is not fully fit and looked it had a poor performance and Davies just as bad we just didnt get them forward enough to get behind the defence, with Walker and Rose at there best we would have done a lot better, we need better options

Said it time and time again, Trippier is not good enough. He is an old school typical English cross the ball merchant. His lack of effectiveness tends to be more evident in the big games against better players where his input is minimal. Against the also rans he can look a world beater but only because he is not pressured, You put any pressure on him and he is lost.
In the modern game you need more attacking verve and ball manipulation. In general the squad needs an injection on trickery and pace. This is been apparent for years but then we go spend 42mill on a central defense, our strongest area of the pitch

this really bugs me and still rumours of more to come, no links to attacking players

The real reason you lost is Lloris made a howler.

Without the howler you don't lose the game, not much debate around that really.

I'd say yes and no, my personal opinion is that when we scored we should have set our stall out and got our shape, we lost the goal because we're desperate to attack and move the ball quick hence why Wanyama lost the ball from a sloppy throw out, once you get that pressure to get a second we should have maintained our composure and at least left with a point.

The chances would have come if we'd not got too excited

------------------------------------------------------------------
Even without doing any of that if Lloris makes a routine save that 99/100 he would do you don't lose the game.

Take nothing away from Alonso, the shot was decent, low and controlled

Pretty sure all of us to a man agreed that we can't have Trippier and Davies starting together as neither offer pace going forward

I agree, if they do start they have to be as full backs and not wing backs in a 4-1-3-1 giving support to the wingers/other midfielders by over lapping and under lapping
----------------------------------------------------------------------

More and more these days with AM's playing in central areas as opposed to out wide, the full backs or wing backs are the primary source of width. Yes they clearly have to have ability but they also need to be able to occupy their opponent, stretch the play and be able to play football. Trippier and Davies are decent footballers which is fine, but they don't offer the drive and penetration that's needed in the modern day. We can get away with one of them against the big teams but not both. We've got about 10 days to find a solution. Might have to play 4231 if they're both on the pitch as it would allow Son to play and get someone more direct on the pitch.

If Wanyama has made a routine pass that I could have made there would have been no shot to save. He was facing the ball, the ball was thrown at a reasonable pace to his favoured foot - there's no need to control it.

Didn't see either take on Alonso or Moses all game, Vertonghen and Kane did this, we need pace and penetration out wide

I agree that the positional priorities of signings are baffling, and have been for a while

Once Rose is back there will be good balance on both wings, Tripper has good delivery whilst Rose is a penetrating wingback, I think we need to switch back to a back 4 with central players and width at home, we need to stretch teams

Very good point Thudd. Couldn't agree more. Also as much as Davies has the odd good performance and never really makes many mistakes. I feel sometimes he is all too one dimensional and predictable both for the spectator and opposition.
