Southampton have signed Netherlands centre-back Wesley Hoedt from Lazio for £15m on a five-year deal.
Is VVD on his way to Liverpool?

Except already being the best defender at one of the biggest clubs in the world at 22. That's no small achievement.
Not saying he's not a very good player but he wouldn't be the first defender to look good in a lesser side and struggle after a big move.
Jose knows a good defender better than pretty much anyone and we could afford VVD. The fact we haven't gone for him tells a lot.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Bailey was a Villarreal player a year ago. Had you heard of him? No doubt he's an excellent player, but don't mistake badges for good players. I've watched a fair bit off vvd, and he is a rolls Royce, put him in pools defender and you'll see immeadiate improvement. You'll also see the ability to come forward and the ability to technically pass well. Easily saints prize asset as is, would have been a much better buy than lindeloff- for all his potential. Vvd is one of those few defenders who can make it look easy.
I don't want him at pool. I think it would be their best divining for a few years. Seeing Jose is not adverse to spanking multi millions, why weren't we in there?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
No I hadn't heard of Bailly but that's exactly my point. Jose knows a good defender and adverse to spending huge money so the fact we weren't in for him speaks volumes.
I don't think Lindelof is a 'now' but he could turn out to be fantastic who knows.

Don't doubt it, lindeloff will prove a good signing. But you as a partner for bailey, to mimic the great vidic/Rio combination- I honestly cannot think of a better player to do the Rio role than vvd. And fecking pool may well get him. If not- Jose, get in there.

VVD may turn out to be a great player for a big club but I still feel he has loads to prove.
Also thought Chelsea are in for him now.
The thing is Jose could've probably gotten him last summer and probably wouldn't have costed much more than Bailly at that time, he chose not to.
This summer he went after Lindelof even though we could more than afford VVD, he chose not to.
Jose picks out defenders probably better than pretty much any other manager and he chose Bailly and Lindelof over VVD.

I suspect that had a lot to do with 75/90m for lukaku. And perhaps trying to dispel the stigma he has if not buying for the future. Despite what it looks like our budget is not unlimited, another 70m (more for us) is a lot more than the 30 for lindeloff.

You may be right but I bet he'd have gotten VVD for 40 million or so last summer but chose not to. And he has definitely bought for the future. 4 of his 7 signings are young players.

You say he might not do it at a big side, yet he already has at Celtic.
Here aren't many teams in the world where the pressure to win every game is as intense as it is up here.
He's also proven himself at EPL level, comfortbaly. He can tackle, reads the game superbly, has a wand of a left foot on him (scores free kicks), is a big unit so poses a threat at set pieces and does the opposite at the other end, he's rapid, and he's composed enough to pick a pass.
Bailly is very raw. He does look good in the tackle and quick but needs to work on a lot more of his game as his passing isn't up to much and he's rash in the tackle at times.
To try and undermine Van Dijk because he's at Southampton smacks of arrogance. Just need to look at Lukaku.. performed sporadically for years at lesser English clubs (struggled at Chelsea) and he's now Man United's saviour. Also spent just under £100m on him.
That's what it takes to get that calibre of player in England now with the silly money floating about. Van Dijk is very much worth his valuation

Maybe because you had other areas of the team that you needed to address more immediately, ie in attack with Ibra leaving and because you weren't creative enough. Not to mention Jose loves a CDM, hence Matic.
When you spunked most of your money on Lukaku, it limited what else Mourinho could do in the transfer window.

This the same Mourinho who signed;
Del Horno,
Boulahrouz,
Ben Haim,
Burdisso,
Raul Albiol,
Coentrao,
Darmian.
???
Almost every good defender Mourinho has had, he's inherited from previous managers. Granted he gets them playing solidly, but acts as much to do with the team's shape and having two defensive midfielders protecting them.
