He's right to do that imo.
He should concentrate on Everton and not constantly having the willhe, won't he get recalled hanging over him.
Rooney retires from international football

Wouldn't surprise me at all if Kane has a better international career then Rooney.
Rooney's international career has been a major disappointment despite such a blistering start to it.

He must have been told there's no way back for him

In his statement he said Southgate called him up for the upcoming international games.

Yeah, he called him up and said: "Hi Wayne. Listen, you're not in the squad."

Literally nothing to suggest Kane will have a better international career.

Dunno- Kane did a pretty good impression of rooney in at a big tourney at the euros, scored nothing, looked crap. Could be exactly the man to take the mantle.

I think Rooney needed one or two quality attacking players with him to really shine whilst over his time our better players were further back.

Good decision. He initially stated he'd call it a day after the World Cup but he probably realised he'd be a tourist rather than starter for the next 10 months and called it a day.

Here are a few reasons for why I predict he'll go on to be better than Rooney:
1) He can't be much worse at tournaments barring 04
2) Kane doesn't smoke or drink, and generally looks after himself better
3) Kane has less chance of getting sent off
4) Kane looks like he'll go on to be the better goalscorer in the league, so why not for England too?

1) He's off to a good start
2) Plenty don't but aren't a patch on those that do
3) Rooney had one big sending off in a tournament that caused problems, hardly a career defining thing.
4) Does he? Rooney is 2nd highest and pretty close to first, if it was easy loads of others would have done it

1) He'd need to carry that on through the majority of tournaments to be as bad as Rooney.
2) Reminds me of Ronaldo and Rooney when they were young. One took better care of himself and worked harder than the other, and went on to have the better career.
3) It played a part in 2 tournaments, once when he was sent off against Portugal, and then prior to Euro 2012 meaning he missed the first 2 matches.
4) 3 consecutive seasons of getting over 20 league goals at the start of his career, compared to Rooney only having 2 of them. Yeah I'd say so.

1) His performance last summer was as bad as anything Rooney has offered at a major tournament.
2) Fitness is important, absolutely. So too is ability and mentality. Kane needs to improve on what he has on both counts at international level.
3) Absolutely he has less chance of getting sent off - in the PL at least. Many players would have walked for Kane's deliberate scissors challenge at Newcastle that led to the player being injured for a few weeks at least. Kane's reputation as Englands new golden boy might not stretch to special favours on the international scene.
4) Agreed about his PL scoring - I reckon he could challenge, perhaps even beat Shearers record if he keeps rattling them in. Doesn't have the same record for England though (not sure but I think since Kane made his debut for England, Rooney has still outscored him, or had done until recently). Bit harder at international level when the team is probably comparable to a mid table PL team, whereas at Spurs he has a top 4 team supplying him.
