Pedro - A Correction

I posted a comment on the Pedro Caixinha thread last night. It was at 2 am so it got a bit lost. It involved a bit of research, so it's getting it's own OP now. Apologies to anyone reading this for the second time.

There is a lot of revisionism and inflation of Pedro's achievements going around.

There is also a huge misunderstanding of how the Mexican league works. I just want to set the record straight.

First off he never won all of the trophies in one season while at Mexico, that is completely false.

In Mexico they play 2 half seasons in a year with a winter break in between, with play offs and trophies handed out for each half season, to add a bit of interest.

So in the 2014/15 season, just as in every ither season, they crowned one half season champion just before Christmas and another in May 2015 at the end of the entire season. They then crown the aggregate champion. The half season champions are not completely worthless titles as they guarantee entry to the CONCACAF champions league.

At the winter break in 2014/15 Americà were top and Pedro's Santos Laguna were 9th (the top 8 make the play offs) so Pedro missed out on the play offs. Americà went on to win the play offs thus landing the half season trophy and getting guaranteed championsite league football.

After the winter break the points are reset to zero and the teams go again. This time Pedro's Santos Laguna finished 8th, thereby just making the playoffs. Fair play to Pedro as they then won the play offs and got the other half season trophy getting entry to the champions league.

The 2 half seasons are then added together to decide the actual Mexican champions

UANL were crowned Mexican champions for 2014/15

Pedro's Santos Laguna finished 7th, with a record of:

12 wins
12 draws
10 losses

This was the season we were told that Pedro won the Mexican League.

Pedro has never actually won the Mexican league, that was all spin. Just as if the Ross County manager went to Mexico claiming to have won the Scottish league given that he finished top of the bottom six table after the split.

His other two trophies in Mexico consisted of an apertura cup (the first of 2 cups in a season, like our league cup), and the champion of champions cup 2016.

The latter there sounds impressive, however in reality it's an exhibition match between the two cup winners which is sometimes played and sometimes not (Pedro won the first one they bothered organising in a decade). It was a one off game played in the USA as a showcase for Mexican soccer.

So basically he won one equivalent of the league cup while in Mexico, and that's it for his entire managerial career.

Rangers fans should be livid at the appointment and the spin their club has used to sell it.

What I was meaning was it didn't need covered as you had already done so in such an eloquent manner on various occasions.
