48 hours to save our season

Wenger is the longest serving manager in PL history. He has had time to assemble not 1, 2, 3, 4 but probably around 8 teams.

Wenger has assembled a team which do not work a system .. but players he likes for their individual qualities.

Let's take mourinho. He has a tried and tested system. He will go to a new club, check the players he's inherited, analyse them to see if they fit his system. For example, do I have a dm who's sole purpose is to protect the defence? If he doesn't, he will look on the market for a player who is a specialist at that skill he needs for that role.

Wenger is player based. He will like someone for their individual, unique quality. He will be fixated on one player, buy them then try to find a role for them.

That creates an unbalanced team where there are roles which are not being fulfilled.

Wenger has been slowly replacing quality players with average ones this entire decade. The team you put out against Liverpool was shockingly average - take Sanchez out and it was a midtable side. I think the very fact you conceded more than any other top six side last season, and yet he has failed to address the defence (8 goals conceded in opening 3 games) tells you everything you need to know with regards to vision and motivation to succeed. I've always defended him as he was a master in his day, but the malaise is palpable now and if I was an arsenal fan I'd be craving change. As a Spurs fan though, I'm quite happy to sit back and watch the turmoil (sorry!).

No need to apologise; we'd do the same if the shoe was on the other foot.

Go have a look at our squad

https://www.arsenal.com/first-team/players

31 players. Gibbs to be sold. 3 U21 (I think). Ox likely to go. That still leaves us 1 player over the maximum allowed. Look at all the dross in there who we may have to keep - Debuchy, Akpom, etc.

Scares the crap out of me that this could be our squad until at least January.

It was on the other foot a few seasons back, but Levy - a Chairman who actually cares about his club - did something about it. Kroenke and Co dont give a sh-t.
So whilst spurs eventually recovered, I do not share that optimism about Arsenal who are totally incompetent from top to bottom. Our club is extremly sick, whereas spurs were simply suffering from a temporary illness.

"48 hours to save our season" is not relevant. The prerequisite to any changes made is sacking Wenger - Kroenke doesn't look like he wants to do that and Gazidis doesn't have the balls to force the issue.

Wenger has been making a similar mess of it for many years without any sign of being prepared or even able to change - why would anybody expect anything different now ?

You don't have to. If we needed space for incoming players and there is no demand for a loan move Arsenal can just release the likes of Debuchy.

If Alexis goes we don't need to bother with two behind the striker.

I always go back to a template that worked early in Wenger's career and really should have been messed around with. Midfield + attack

----Freddie (theo)---Gilberto(xhaka)---Vieira(???)---Pires (Mahrez/Lemar/draxler/even try Ramsey)
---------------Dennis (Ozil)------------------------
--------------------------------Henry(Lacazette)-------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Comparing Xhaka to Gilberto is an insult to the Brazilian. He was great at breaking up opposition attacks and letting the rest of the team get back to defend. Xhaka does just about nothing to defend. He is a liability to the team.

Ok Petit then.

Comparing Xhaka to any former Arsenal CM is an insult to that player. Xhaka is about as good as Petit with his legs tied together when he played of us and I'd still expect Petit to win more in the air.

I am not a huge fan but was willing to give him a season to settle last year. I don't think he is that bad. He can be managed by a decent big, fast, tall player alongside. Only need Wenger to see it and that would probably take 3 years and by that time Wenger will be gone anyway.

Played in the right system Xhaka definitely has ability.

I remember on the old BBC606 pages Petit, Gilberto and many others (now considered club greats) were given dog's abuse. Gilberto in particular was often singled out for his passing.

Not that Xhaka is in anyway comparable. He's just not as bad as many believe - if played in a system that plays to his strengths. Not so sure that's going to happen at AFC.
