Even transfer deadline week...

...is more exciting than actually watching international football.

I mean, with all the tabloid gossip and excited murmurings about deadline day deals (most of which will amount to absolutely zip), who has even bothered checking which players have been selected for which international squads, or even looked at the complete fixture lists for the international break?

Hands up if you're going to spend the next ten days twiddling your thumbs just itching for the PL action to start up again.

Is it time to ditch international football completely? Or at least have rid of the pointless friendlies and ridiculously predictable qualifying rounds and limit it to just the summer tournaments ?

I'll be going to Edgebaston instead of Old Trafford this weekend, so a week off the football for me.

Yeah that's fair point.

This is from a fans point of view though. The FA make a mint out of loyal England fans so I can't see any change.

The balance of power is continuing to shift though.

The FA almost have to operate at the whim of the incomparatively cash-rich PL now, and the big clubs arguably have more sway collectively than any other parties in football outside FIFA and UEFA.

Money, as it does in all industries, will continue to reshape the sport, and in all seriousness (which is not exactly where I started with this article) I can see the national game being somewhat marginalised.

Yep but I do think the players are still up for it and that could make a difference.

I've no doubt there will be a European super league at some point so maybe football will end up like cricket with players signing international contracts or sommat.

There should be a World Cup every summer with teams qualifying through the alphabet. That'd give us all something to watch, get rid of all the boring qualifiers and give people who are so inclined a chance to wave a flag about and shout at foreigners.

I much prefer club football but I do watch the internationals as well.

Wales have a big game at the weekend and there'll be a great atmosphere in Cardiff, and the rest of the country, for the match.

We don't get that much exposure internationally in Wales and the football team was a source of great pride last summer for us so I'd hate to see it go.

The only downside is that it was easy for me to get tickets to see us losing 5-1 at home to Slovakia but not as easy now for the games. It's all good though as I'd much rather a (relatively) successful team.

In my system, the toughest team Wales would face would probably be Uruguay or Turkey. Real chance to win the world cup.

England would be stuck in the same competition as France, Germany, Italy, possibly even Brazil too. They're f-cked.

I think it should be split 6-6-6-4-4 so that Wales would be in the W, X, Y, Z cycle......

If it's any consolation under my system England would not have to face Germany!

Argentina, Brazil, France, Chile, Colombia, Belgium and Croatia I think are all currently ranked above England

I'm taking my two lads to their first international match on Saturday - an early start to travel south to Cardiff - they can't wait!!

Usual international breaks are pretty boring though

Good stuff. Hope it's a day, and result, to remember!

My first international was sat on my Dad's shoulders at the Racecourse in 1987! Ian Rush scoring a late equalizer against Czechoslovakia. Hope your lads go one better for the win.
