DPL vs Peterborough Utd

A bad time to meet the form team, but unless the quality which seemed so evident before last Saturday's performance was totally illusory to all of us, the head would overrule the gloom of heart and say we have a good chance of undermining what will no doubt be a very confident opposition.

Tofollo featured frequently for Scunthorpe last season in their successful 3rd place in this league, so he has good credentials and may well provide solidity down the left. It is all very well having attacking defenders which Fergie obviously likes, but perhaps our record suggests that whilst bus-parking may not be an essential defensive strategy, it might be worth trying out when things are not going well. There do seem lots of attacking formations operated, so why not some defensive alternatives?

Having talked myself into a more optimistic mood I am now ready to make a guess at 2-1 to us with Marquis on the mark and an excited 8500 audience.

Who do we think will line up? Will it be Alcock or Toffolo, May, Mandeville, Williams, Marosi, Houghton, the permutations are endless...

A good contest with the refreshing change that both teams tried to win the game.
Peterborough shaded the first half but after the hour mark it was Rovers who were the most likely winners.
Lawlor had a good solid match and did nothing tong, a couple of very good saves too.
Blair, a bit dodgy at times no seemed to be caught in two minds on a few occasions.
Butler and Wright - superb again.
Garrett, excellent, this is the first time I have seen him for more than ten minutes and I was impressed.
Mason, a solid enough game and played some good early passes.
Whiteman, solid enough and did some hard work.
Copps, again not at his best but did play some great passes in the first half.
Rowe was hard working and looked the most likely to block the door.
May grafted as usual but when he broke clear in the second half he hesitated instead of getting his shot away.
Marquis was, well - Marquis. He worked socks off but apart from the half chance in the first half didn't really have another good scoring opportunity.
Mandeville looked good when he came on and created some half chances with his clever footwork.
Williams worked hard and did look as though if anyone was going to score it could be him.
Houghton went unnoticed, I say that in a good way because that is what he does, gets on with it and rarely makes an error.

I feel that the future is a positive one.
Overall, defensively we look solid enough and going forward I think there are plenty of goals to come.

Unlock, not block the door.
Forgot to add, Wright or Butler for my m.o.m.

Thanks for your report Hound which was a world apart from the so-called “highlights” which suggested total Peterborough dominance. However the extended highlights seem to provide a more balanced view of the game as illustrated by your report Hound.

The obvious conclusion is that if Posh are one of the best in the league that showing says that we should be good enough to at least sustain League 1 status. I was re-assured by the defence which did not seem to disengage into “observation mode” when challenging and harrying was required. So much is progress.

We will have to be patient this season and with time to acclimatise we can learn how to get ahead and stay there. I was at another League 1 match yesterday and judging by the standard there we should have it in us to rise above the pack and even perhaps challenge at the top if we stay composed rather than panic as we did at Wimbledon.

There were 2 predictions of a draw, but 0-0 was seemingly unimaginable; well done Mooligan and Selby. So crowd points were the main scores.

Looking back I feel the Marquis of last season would have buried the chance in the first half from the slack back lass. Indeed the soccer Saturday pundits said the same. A good point. Now onto Northampton 👍

Next two games, should be 6pts but, what team will he pick. Think a couple need to be replaced, give them a kick up the harse that they seem to need.
Houghton has to start, Whiteman top of diamond, rest Copps instead of him playing 2x60mins. Will Toffolo start? Will he play with 2 wing backs against them?
I did notice that Blair wasn't his usual self till the subs came on, then he was running onto balls instead of them being played to him. So did more attacking in last 15mins than he did all game. Loved the run and one twos at the end before crossing for Williams to miss.
At first we all thought the defender got there first, but, we all looked at the big screen for the reply and sure enough Williams shot hit the defender skidding across the goal line. You could say it was a brilliant bit of defending, I'd say it was a horrible miss. Trying to hard to hit the target rather than putting your foot through it.
See Marquis and both report for extra shooting practice

BVZ, that is being too hard on Williams, he did everything right.
He got to the ball before the keeper and defender and got his effort on target.

If it had been Joe Wright doing the defending you would have said what a fantastic stop it had been.

Also, i guess you are saying that we should get 6 points from the next two games because our opponents are in the bottom four.
However, we are only a few games into the season and dont forget that Northampton have just appointed a new manager this week so their players will be busting a gut to impress him.
Also, both games are away from home.
I hope we do get the six points but to say that "the next two games should be six points" is being a bit optimistic i think.

I hope you are right though.

I agree with Hound. I can't make an informed comment on Northampton, but I saw Rochdale on Saturday and they could well have won at Southend. They looked confident and were lively and enterprising in the first half and held out well in the second with 10 men in the second half. They have had several good seasons recently in League 1 with top half finishes including periods of contention for the top places. I doubt whether they will remain as low in the table as they are currently.
