Football Players’ Families & Dementia

Frank Kopel.

A very welcome decision today.

Like Hillsborough - decades late and doesn’t go far enough IMO.

The link between players heading heavy balls in earlier decades and

brain deterioration is clear if not precisely quantified.

His widow Amanda said ‘’ I know he will be proud of me, I know he'll be

saying: 'You've done it, hen, you've kept your promise to me'."

I echo Frank.

Good on ye hen.

Just joking man, serious questions being asked over here about the NFL some payouts already happening behind closed doors.

Kids between the ages of 5-10 are not allowed to head the ball here in games and as soon as the ball goes any higher than 4ft the ref stops the game and restarts it on the floor again.

A humans Brain is not fully developed until they are 25, yes we are all feckin radio rental with the amount of booze, drugs we put into it before then.

There was an amazing interview with his wife on a Sportsound podcast a few months back. When he took ill and his wife gave up work to look after him she said they really struggled financially to get by. Frank sold off all his football stuff including his 1968 United blazer to a collector. Years later when Frank was at deaths door his wife told of a knock at the door and when she opened it the postman had a package for Frank. Turns out the collector had been tipped off about how ill Frank was and sent it back to him. She said she took it up stairs and had it draped out so Frank could see it in the morning. She said she lay on the bed that night and spoke to him while he was asleep and whispered to him that his blazer was "back home where it belonged". She then told how Frank never woke up the next morning. The podcast was amazing but that bit was terribly sad and hard to listen to

If anyone wants to listen to the podcast interview then it's from about 13 mins onwards. The podcast is about their life together and some insight into his football life.

Cheers Lurker.

In a bit of a rush this morning will catch it later.

I think the story about the blazer is quite uplifting actually.

There is a lot of humanity in it.

Listened to it at the time and it was very good

it was damn moving if I remember it rightly - was that the one where she said one day he just got up and danced with her to an elvis song?

Friggin heartbreaking and warming at the same time
