Why didn't Roy succeed at Pool?

He had all the tools and a massive reputation for getting the very best out of bang average teams.

At that time he should have been in his element at Pool

Bad signings and terrible football.

Fair point. But the fans did not give him a chance from day one

Well that not true but even if it was it shouldn't matter. Your scųmbags had Rafa out signs at his very first game and he managed well enough.

In 3 months, he took us from 3 points off the top to 18 behind United, blew the weakest Club World Cup in years, lost both legs of Carling semi v Swansea. He was great!

Or he won a trophy and finished 3rd.

Fair enough but it is a reductive simplistic analysis.

We lost away to Steaua, struggled v Sparta, lost away to Rubin Kazan. And if you think we were lucky v Bayern in Munich, you should have seen us v Benfica in Amsters.

We were lucky not to lose at the Bees.

He could not get Torres going in the league despite building a team around him.

And only when Terry and player power took over did we recover (a little) in the league.

Well I imagine you blame yourself seeing as you brought up the fans.

He's a manager that has no clue how to set a team out to attack creativity, managing a top club you kinda have to. The job exceeded his grasp.

On Benitez, Robbing_Hoody is right. We never gave Benitez a chance, I understand why but lets not pretend we did. If we'd won the league that season the reaction would've been 'thanks, now f@ck off and make way for Jose'

We didn't like him from word go.

But he was stupid challenging club captain when he was only interim.

That was Rafa's ego and it cost us 2 trophies.

A World Club Title v a Corinthians side in disarray and very winnable Carling cup semi v Swansea and final b Bradford.

I stood in the Wendy House v Brentford and it was our worst performance I have witnessed since 80s.

We should have lost 3 or 4 nil.

Whether or not he did a good job is debatable, but we never gave him a chance, that's just fact.

All he did was tell Terry he believed at his age he couldn't play two games a week, no ego, his opinion.

Yep, two winnable competitions he dropped the ball on. But he also won the Europa + got to the S/F of the FA Cup + hit the league objective. Mixed bag, not failure.

That Brentford game wasn't great but we had a lot of dud matches that season and not all of them were under Benitez. I've never seen us be as outclassed as we were in the Super Cup. We looked tired against Brentford, we were fresh and got absolutely owned against Atletico.

In hindsight one thing that amuses me about that season is we played more games than United did last season (with a thinner squad) and I can't recall Benitez moaning once about fatigue. Makes Jose look like an even bigger b!tch than he did already
