Invictus Games

I AM

As most who know me know I am huge fan and supporter of the Invictus Games.

It returns this Sunday. Toronto are the hosts this time around and we are sending a team of 90.

Most of you will have heard of it or watched it at some point and I hope you will be tuning in again next week.

A friend of mine who I spent many months with overseas has made the UK team this year and I have no doubt she has put her heart and soul into making that team.

When you sit down to watch it just remember - we are the lucky ones.

On my profile I have had a poem on there or a number of years now. You will no doubt hear it repeated on the Invictus programmes a few times

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll.
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul

see tbh, not the worst mentality to have these days quiff.

its how bags get spotted on trains.

always annoys me when you see ex soldiers without a home, on the streets.

how can that be allowed to happen

You will know from experience that one sees some horrible things in warzones. He was a Warrant Officer in the Marines, 22 years man

I've experienced just a fraction of what these guys and girls have. I was fortunate that my job took me in and out of the front line. Many spend their entire time there

Oddly enough that is covered in the book. We only hear of the ones they don't catch.

Don't get me started on homeless veterans. Procedures are improving, it is a requirement now for councils to provide housing for folk leaving the military but what you'll find are guys are leaving and all they are offered are flats in the worst areas so they guys rent privately, shack up with mates etc.

Then if they don't find work quick enough what money they did have is gone and they are then way down the list on the council housing so homelessness homelessness happens due to no options

an overally problem with the system imo.

its odd how u can hear about some single mums, struggling to survive and feeding their kids toast for dinner and other ones that dont work and manage to get out every weekend.

way off topic but huge 60" TV's, computer consoles, expensive clothing, out partying all the time

Don't work

Then there are families like ours both working who look at the cost of these things and then weigh up if we can afford to make that purchase

My mates an addiction counsellor. Sometimes these extravagant purchases are made as a way to try and compensate for their failings or impoverished circumstances. So they buy a 60inch TV as they see happy functional families of TV adverts who have them. It's often reckless purchases to address a self loathing or guilt.
