Gomez and Matip....why not?

As a CB partnership, i think Gomez has done enough to have a go with Matip. Lets face it Klavan and Lovren have both made massive and continuous mistakes time and time again.

I think Gomez has the attributes needed, hes tall powerful and is pacey. I cant see any reason why he shouldnt be given a go tbh...we really cant be any worse imo.

Should have bought Harry McGuire or Davison Sanchez, would have been perfect for Liverpool... Players who put defensive duties first

Only if they played for Southampton

Davinson Sanchez I can agree with. Half of the price of Van Djik for a younger player who Klopp can and likely will improve and has played in a European final so has good experience for his age. Missed a trick there.

Not Harry Maguire. Think he has found his level in the PL. Signing Maguire for his defensive duties would be like signing somebody like Ryan Shawcross. Found his level at mid table.

Maybe but given the amount you have the ball, you don't really need a "Beckenbauer" type.. You just need someone who does the simple things well & conceontrates.... defending isn't brain surgery. Chasing VVD for stupid money was pointless & totally short sighted. Its a shame because you have some fantastic players. Of all the saints players u signed over the years, you missed the 2 u really needed.... Wanyama & Toby Alderweireld

Ok...

so Joe gomez did well on the ball v leicester.

However he was under absolutely no pressure at all for 45mins.

He also was the one playing them on for the first goal.... so no. He's got to learn his trade.

My issues with a matip Gomez axis are:

1. both are strongly right footed. Neither has experience playing LCB.

2. Matip is not a talker and won't help the lad through a game.

Theres two things at play here. First if we are writing off the season fine lets do it and see if next year he's learned enough to make a difference, second we seem to be very confident that despite the evidence that matip/lovren together does wokr "ok" that its just not good enough.

How do you know gomez/matip would not be just as exposed by the crazy midfield antics we see and we are just swapping faces who are getting run at 1 on 1 and are always on the edge.

Matip seems competent with the ball and likes his occasional drives forward. Sanchez is also comfortable with the ball, demonstrated at Spurs this season as well as at Ajax last year. It's something Liverpool needed really a ball playing defender but at least both Matip and Sanchez would have been able to defend fairly well.

Liverpool really lack the protection in the midfield, it's just not the discipline that Henderson has. Good to keeping the ball moving, but he can't break up attacks or slow up counter attacks. Something a Wanyama-type player would do. Would be very surprised if Klopp didn't turn to someone like Lars Bender from Leverkusen in January, who does have the discipline to just sit in and break up the play as well as being good on the ball. Would be a worthwhile signing as a starting point anyway and he would be eligible for Europe.

To build a title winning side, you need a strong spine:

Courtois-Luiz-Kante-Costa for example

Liverpool need a quality Keeper, CB, CM and CF

GK, VVD, Keita, CF

Think Firmino is certainly a good option for that spine. No worse in his position than what VVD and Keita are in theirs either. Not everybody's cup of tea as an "out and out" striker, but certainly good enough imo and links with the midfielders really well. Flourishes under Klopp.

Mignolet has shown improvements, but agree Liverpool need a top class GK that can earn them 5-10 points a season, unfortunately, neither Karius/Mignolet do that for me.

I think that is a fair comment.
