For many the Lukaku chant was considered crass and appealed mainly to simpletons. Might have been amusing when heard the first time but glad it's not going to have the longevity other chants have.
As a player you would want the songs to focus on your footballing ability.
So in comparison to other complementary chants aimed at other United players it showed a lack of respect.
In the words of Eric Cantona "So much the better if my goals give you something to sing about. Nothing else is important!"
There have been plenty of more creative, humorous and memorable chants over the years for players:
Viva Ronaldo
Giggs will tear you apart .. again
Ryan Giggs running down the wing
You are my Solskjaer
We'll drink a drink (Cantona)
Neville Neville (to the tune of Rebel Rebel)
Diego ... He made the scousers cry
What elements make for a good chant (for a player) - and why are some picked up by the crowd and not others?
Sing-along-ability would be my main criteria. Pick a catchy tune.
What makes a good chant?

I always liked Adnan Januzaj Song. He didn't live up to his ability but it really captured the optimism of the fans in an otherwise bleek period for the club:
I wanna tell you,
I might as well do,
About a boy who can do anything.
He comes from Belgium.
His name is Adnan.
Januzaj, Januzaj, Januzaj
It was a catchy tune, although I'm not sure what the original was.
I also like the Martial song as it tells a story and captures the feeling that was created when he scored that amazing goal for us against Liverpool after all the 'experts' saying he would be a waste of money.
Basically, I like chants that capture the feeling/ mood of the fans and tell a story about the player.
We've set a good standard for ourselves with this. I'm glad to see the Lukaku chant didn't last for the reasons you mentioned, and I think you articulated your point well.

The one we sang about Torres was fantastic.
One of the best chants I've heard though is Derby fans chant about Collymore. By the way it had a line it in much worse than anything in the Lukaku chant.

Only a few fans know/sing the songs at OT and only mainly sing My Old Man and Kick Knack Paddy Whack at home games when the away support gets embarrassingly too noisy.
However, away is a different kettle.
