Based on the squad chosen, which i'm not entirely happy with this would be starting 11 for the 1st test.
1) Cook
2) Stoneman
3) Ballance/Vince
4) Root
5) Moeen
6) Bairstow
7) Stokes
8) Foakes
9) Woakes
10) Broad
11) Anderson
Not happy about either Vince or Ballance in the squad and feel that will be a definite weakness at 3 and Stoneman may struggle as he hardly set the world alight against the windies but apart from that I feel we have a strong batting line-up from 4-8 and Cook. Woakes and Broad can also chip in and Anderson knows how to defend and rotate the strike when with a set batsman.
Foakes scored a world class 127 against South Africa's 1st team for the lions in June and is a superior batsmen to Ballance/Malan/Vince and should be selected ahead of them.
If we want another bowler, probably Overton, we can drop whoever is batting at 3 and move Root and everyone else up one or drop Foakes.

Ball had a decent season last year but has been pretty quiet since. He's done okay in the limited overs cricket for Notts but considering they were in division 2, didn't take enough wickets in first class cricket for me.
Overton has been improving over the last few seasons and deserves his place in the squad and (with no Stokes or TRJ) the starting XI.

I've just seen that Ball is going to be selected ahead of Overton. Wrong call but the game doesn't hinge on who plays out of those 2. I think Ball will get some smashed about so Overton will get a chance although obviously hopefully Ball will show us what he's made of.

Also talk of Moeen coming in at 6 with Bairstow remaining at 7. Just let him stay behind Jonny in the batting line up and try not to change too much with the absence of Stokes.

Yeah I've just seen. Don't fully agree with it but it is what it is. Overton offers more with bat and ball and in the absence of Stokes. Let's hope Ball can prove us wrong though and do what the likes of Finn and Tremlett did 7 years ago.
