International week update...

AFC
Australia (1-1) Syria - Tuesday 10th
Winner goes onto the Inter-confederation play-off against a CONCACAF side.

CAF
The final games in Africa are on November 6th - bar South Africa and Senegals double header (10th and 14th)

Group A -
Tunisia lead DR Congo by 3 points. Tunisia face Libya and Congo play Guinea in the final group game in November.

Group B -
Nigeria are through.

Group C -
Morocco head the group, 1 point ahead of Cote d'Ivoire. They meet on the Ivory Coast next month in a decider.

Group D -
Senegal beat Cape Verde 2-0 to top the group by two points. South Africa beat Burkina Faso to rejoin the race, 4 points off top.
In November Senegal and South Africa have a double header (due to a previous game being written off for a dodgy ref). Cape Verde and Burkina Faso face off in what looks a dead rubber now.

Group E -
Egypt qualify. Ghana are out.

CONCACAF
Costa Rica join Mexico in qualifying.
USA are 3rd on 12 points, with Panama and Honduras on 10 points. Panama also hold a 5 goal advantage over Honduras.
Top 3 qualify while 4th go into the inter-confederation play-off.
Tuesday nights games:
Honduras v Mexico
Panama v Costa Rica
Trinidad and Tobago v USA

CONMEBOL
Thursdays games sorted nothing.
The current standings:

1- Brazil - 38pts (+27) = Q
2 - Uruguay - 28pts (+10) = guaranteed play-off at least
3 - Chile - 26pts (+2)
4 - Colombia - 26pts (+2)
------------------------------------------------
5 - Peru - 25pts (+1)
============================
6 - Argentina - 25pts (+1)
7 - Paraguay - 24pts (-5)
=============================
8 - Ecuador - 20pts (-1)
9 - Bolivia - 14pts (-20)
10 - Venezuela - 9pts (-17)

Tuesday nights fixtures
Brazil v Chile
Ecuador v Argentina
Paraguay v Venezuela
Peru v Colombia
Uruguay v Bolivia

UEFA
Monday -
Group D -
Wales v Republic of Ireland is a massive game. The winner is certain of at least 2nd place, but Serbia's surprise defeat to Austria opens the door for the automatic qualification place. However, an Irish win may not be enough for a play-off place, while a draw will likely see Wales miss out.
Serbia host Georgia, a win sends them to Russia.

Group G -
Nothing to play for. Spain qualified, Italy into play-offs.

Group I -
Iceland just need to beat Kosovo to send them to the World Cup. Ukraine and Croatia meet, winner taking the play-off place (barring a shock in Iceland). A draw is enough for Croatia to get second, but would leave them vulnerable in the 2nd place table.

Tuesday -
Group A -
France lead Sweden by a point. The French will therefore qualify with a win over Belarus.
Sweden face the Netherlands in their final game, and only a 7 goal margin is enough for the Dutch to take 2nd.

Group B -
All down to Portugal v Switzerland on Tuesday. The Swiss hold a 3 point lead, so only have to avoid defeat. Any Portugal win will be enough for them, as they have the better goal difference.

Group H -
Belgium are through, and Greece only need to beat Gibraltar to take second and a play-off place.

2nd Place Table :
1 - Portugal - 18pts
2 - Italy - 17pts*
2 - Denmark - 14pts *
4 - Croatia - 14pts *
5 - Sweden - 13pts
6 - Northern Ireland - 13pts *
7 - Greece - 13pts *
8 - Republic of Ireland - 13pts
======================
9 - Slovakia - 12pts

* have played all 8 games, while the rest have played 7 of 8

Africa has such a lack of consistency in who qualifies. Whereas in the other 2nd tier confederations where you can safely say certain teams will definitely qualify (Mexico, US, South Korea, Japan), Africa seems to be different every time.
Ghana and Ivory Coast have had a bit of consistency, but that looks like it will end this year.
Egypt went through a spell of being dominant in the AFCON in the 90s/00s, but haven't qualified for the World Cup since 1990!
Nigeria win the AFCON, then don't even qualify for the next!
----------------------------------------------------------------------
What's the reason for this?

Difficult qualification process (Cameroon, Algeria, Nigeria, Zambia in same group for example).

Poor coaching, and short term planning, I guess also plays a part. Finance always seem to be part of it.
Star players always seem to cause frictions - especially in the Western nations.

I have a feeling Uganda might sneak past Egypt in qualifying. Would be good to see a new team at the World Cup

Yeah, always good to see new teams there - that is why we have to get behind Syria and then possibly Panama...

Iceland and then Burkina Faso or Cape Verde look like the best bets for World Cup debuts.

Germany vs Cape Verde might be a massacre.

Normal disorganisation and instability with the federations and country. Nigeria probably didn't qualify last time as they hardly get paid, Obi had to put up his own money during the Olympics.

Egypt are no longer a force due to the issues within the country, meaning that it's not as stable as it was in the 90s

Nigeria qualified today.
Italys play-off place is definite.

With Greece finished on 13 points, a win for Scotland and Wales will be enough to confirm their play-off spot. Draws leave both vulnerable.
Ireland have it tougher, currently with 10 points and a goal difference of just +1. So to ensure they avoid being eliminated despite being 2nd they will have to beat Wales by a few or hope someone does worse than Greece.

Poland book their ticket to Russia.
Northern Ireland and Denmark guarantee a play off place.
