England U17s - Gomes scores a cracker

England U17s started their World Cup campaign brightly with a very comfortable 4-0 win over Chile in Kolkata.

Ex-City, now Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho set up the first before scoring England's second and third goals, but it was United's Angel Gomes with the pick of the strikes, placing a 25-yard freekick in the top corner to seal the victory.

Highlights of the game, with Gomes's freekick at 1:30, can be seen here:

Elsewhere, favourites Germany started with a stuttering narrow victory over Costa Rica; Brazil beat Spain; and France, Japan and the USA got off to flyers with comfortable wins.

England next face Mexico, who drew their opener with Iraq, on Weds evening (17:00 local time).

Gomes is Iniesta with goals. Going to be world class.

Iniesta with goals would be the greatest player of all time.

I'm not sure he's going to live up to that.

Aye, Mourinho will ruin him.

I watched the game, it was a great freekick but it was against their striker in goal

---------------------------------------------------

I don't think their first choice GK would've saved it either.

Gomes created two good chances within about a minute of coming on and his pass through to Brewster eventually lead to the Chile GK being sent off. He played well but you couldn't argue if the same side started tomorrow against Mexico.

I can't see him replacing George McEachran anyway because he was excellent in midfield on Sunday. Best player on the pitch.

What did the centre midfield look like? Any chance Gomes might play there?

He hasn't played for us in deeper roles this season, but I liked the look of him there earlier last term.

Klopps a big fan of Brewster.

Already had him on the bench last season and has had him training with the first team.

Now a regular in the U23's for whom he has 3 goals in 6 games this season so far.
