Alexander Oskar Holverson

It's simply the biggest Titanic news in months.

A REMARKABLE letter has been uncovered, written the day before the Titanic disaster. It says "if all goes well we will arrive in New York on Wednesday". The poignant note by a wealthy first class passenger has been valued at £80,000 but is tipped to break the record for a Titanic letter of £119,000.

On White Star Line headed notepaper, Alexander Oskar Holverson described the luxurious surroundings of the infamous ship. The letter is also the only one of its kind to reference Titanic’s richest passenger, John Jacob Astor, who was on a par with Bill Gates in terms of his wealth.

Mr Holverson, wrote how he sat out on deck with the American businessman who ‘looks like any other human being although he has millions of money’.

Auctioneer Andrew Aldridge described it as ‘the most important letter written on board Titanic to ever come to market’. Aldridge said: “If Alexander Oskar Holverson's letter was virtually unreadable it would still rank amongst the most desirable. Yet the content takes it to another level."

The letter will be sold by Henry Aldridge and Sons in Devizes, Wiltshire, on October 21. It is exceptional on several levels including historical context and rarity.
