NK Maribor

Do these just epitomise how poor the CL is in the modern era? What is the point in having a team like this in the competition really?

Isn't the CL all about having the best teams from Europe in seen as its the most prestigious club competition to win? I know there is the argument for the "Champions" of countries around Europe, but they are just getting hammered every week. Teams like Maribor, Qarabag etc. I'm all for trying to improve the standard of European football, but they will never improve playing in the CL and getting battered every week.

These teams just do not have the financial structure or league competition to be able to compete at this level, so they are never going to improve. They are essentially like Celtic, very little competition domestically, but such poor finances for their domestic league makes it near impossible for them to challenge against Europe's elite. Teams like Arsenal and Hoffenheim for example would surely make for a much more competitive match than this. Christ League Two sides would do better than this!

I for one am happy that England, Spain, Italy and Germany get their top 4 teams automatically into the CL next season, hopefully it will force some of this drivel away that at here to just make up the numbers really. The CL is getting worse year on year now and I think it needs a revamp personally.

(I would appreciate if the Admins would multiboard this to the CL clubs to get their thoughts and views, not just on Maribor alone but the weak sides themselves, thanks)

Why is it? What place does a team like these have in this competition? They are earning it by playing against other teams like themselves. Its the qualifying that gets them in it. For me, scrap the league route and champions route and go back to one big qualifying phase.

Have the teams in the league route as seeded teams and these champions route sides unseeded, as most seem to be much worse off than the others. For example, a team like Sevilla/Hoffenheim seeded, a team like Maribor/Qarabag unseeded. If they can beat Sevilla/Hoffenheim, credit to them, that's when they earn their place. Why is it fair on Hoffenheim to get drawn against Liverpool but Maribor end up with some other $hite from eastern Europe that can't cut it?

Maribor went through 3 rounds before qualifying and drew with Spartak, who then went on to pump Sevilla last night

Maribor drew with Spartak Moscow in the opening fixture, Liverpool battered Spartak but couldn’t get a winner. Spartak beat Sevilla 5-1 last night.
