Shelvey > Henderson

Evening lads

Just watching the Burnley vs Newcastle game and Jonjo is showing once again what a good passer of the ball he is.

Yes he’s a hot head but his vision is superb. He may not have the pass accuracy that Henderson does but I think that’s largely down to Jordan’s preference to knock it back and forth with the defence.

The difference between the two of them is how Shelvey can make Newcastle tick. He’s the cog in the middle and he’s pulling all the strings whereas our captain can at times stifle us with his negative style.

People might ask why I’m comparing them at all but it’s because I always felt we chose to keep the wrong player. Shelvey is like a rough diamond who, under the right coach can reach great heights. Henderson is your typical coached footballer. Neat and tidy, keeps the ball but doesn’t have that spark to really change a game.

I have no personal problem with Henderson but I really think we could and should be expecting much more from a Liverpool midfielder, not to mention a club captain.

Sorry but this is similar to Sakho. You see him doing alright, not exactly pulling up trees, at another club and think why did we get rid of him.

Shelvey is about his level. Lower Pl-championship level player.

Henderson has regressed. It could be due to not being played to his strength or constantly changing roles. People think he is supposed to be a deep lying play maker when he plays for England, yet that's not what he is. He isn't a DM either. He isn't an all action midfielder like Stevie G. He seems like a player who can support attack or defence but isn't either. Maybe a ball winner cm who's better when he's higher up the field, where winning it can cause opposition problems.

I don't know for sure. But he doesn't seem like the player you first signed or thought you were signing.

Only player you sign from that fixture is Tarkowski.

Shelvey is a chit, right footed Xhaka. Considering how bad Xhaka has been this season, that's saying something.

Henderson was arguably the best DM in the Prem last season and had better stats than Kante

So are you saying Shelvey >>>> Kante

Robby would say so, yes

Can't you go and bore the shiite out the fans of your own club?

Henderson has gone backwards and I think his heel problem is causing this. Anyone who has pain killing injections before every game is going to struggle. he is not agile anymore and gets turned easily and I really think he has lost his confidence which is why he is so negative with his passing. Constant sideways balls when our forwards are making great runs is so annoying.

That said I think that Shelvey is a good player but not a top 4 player as he is thick and gets himself in too much trouble

Shelvey is a good mid-table player if he can get his head screwed on and knock off the laziness and childishness. He'd do a good job as a back up for a little higher up the table.

Henderson is a top player, captains club and country and has a great attitude to match. He works hard and inspires others around him to do the same.

Forgetting all that, he's a much better player. He is a much better passer of the ball, tactically he is leagues about and he has more pace and fitness. He's playing in the wrong position at the moment, so that could be used as an excuse for his lack of goal threat compared to Shelvey but for me it's an area he needs to improve on anyhow.

Personally I'd have Can holding and Henderson further forward where he excellent creativity and passing skills would be put to better use. The pass in the game against Spurs to Salah was an example of a world class pass that not many footballers can pull off. If he were more advanced he'd have more chance of doing that.

People feel that Henderson isn't playing as well as he was, for me that's not the case. He's simply been given a more disciplined role which requires less risk in terms of passing and going on forward runs where he can cause problems with his passing. Also he is not the great shield that some would like for the defence. Playing out of position I think he has done well but to put in a real challenge, you'd like a specialist in there with him further ahead.
