So how would you explain our apparent refusal to up the bid to get him, then swooping in ahead of Chelsea to get lukaku? It's not the sort of thing you'd think Jose would be wrong about. He's not getting drogba mk2 in lukaku, he knows this, he sold him.

It was a tidy and somewhat conservative performance from Pogba and yet in those small little moments he could whip out a moment of great skill that marks him head and shoulders above all our other players.
He plays with elegance and is aesthetically pleasing on the eye as a footballer that the moment he's not involved is the moment United sudenly turn into dull-clogger FC,again.

Didn't want to play silly buggers with Madrid I'd imagine. Madrid were making life very hard for us because of the De Gea fiasco. I think that's why we turned attention to Lukaku.

In terms of who suits Mourinho's team better it's no question that it's Morata. You only have to have watched both players play and watched previous Mourinho teams to make this conclusion.

What a ball he played into lukaku

I wont go into the long details but, from what I read from various pieces of info around that time, José was pestering United daily to get the Morata deal done ASAP.
Jose and Morata were in constant contact. Both thought it was only a matter of when rather than if the deal were to go through. Morata was so confident that he'd be signing for us that he dyed his hair red.
Unfortunately for Jose United had other ideas.
United didn’t think Morata warranted the fee. They didn’t feel he was established enough and so we played the mind games with Madrid to try and get them to lower the deal. It obviously didn’t pay off.
United responded by bringing in Lukaku. Jose was indifferent to that deal but felt if Morata wasn’t going to move then all bets were off, for the time being.
Plus United wanted to continue in the same vein similary with the Pogba deal and try to hit a new market.
The moment Morata was Chelsea bound ,while also going for a lower fee ,Jose went abit apeshit.

Also Griezmann and DDG were factors in the Morata deal not coming off.

Not sure I buy that. Makes a bit of sense, but ffs, if we are going to smash 90m on pogba who seemed the right player at the time, and Jose wanted morata, then why not pay it? Was only 70 they were asking wasn't it? So why try and pull rank on Madrid, and then pay far more forsecond choice? Seems mad to me. More likely lukaku was always planned.

You’ve a short memory if you think Ibra of last season was better than Lukaku has been this season.

Morata does miss a lot of sitters.
