37% Possession

Notable that we won tonight with just 37% possession.

Maybe we can put that one to bed now that it's the only way we can improve is by becoming a possession side.

Great to see Puel let the players play the way they know how, with intensity and speed, none of this ticky tacky stuff required, a couple of fantastic goals tonight that could easily have come from the Title winning Season.

So, well done Claude for letting the Players set the pace and dictate the play.

I'm sure they'll be a bit of experimentation against Burnley up next but we can, as we know we're a bigger Club than they are.

Did you know Claude is French for Ranieri?

On the other hand, I'm surprised we managed 37% possession against Spurs. We know they like the ball and usually I'd expect us to have even less than that. But instead at times we were able to pass the ball around calmly and nicely, even under pressure. That was, when we weren't hacking the ball anywhere from inside our own box at other times of course. Obviously there is still work to be done.

Burey will sit back given its an away game, so you might need to tiki taka to draw them out. I was impressed with your performance against Stoke a coupke weeks ago, that was quite balanced.

Wrong its the quality of possesion that was inspiring playing the ball out rather than as we did second half hoofing it and giving it away. Look at the number of players we have introduced that are happy to play with the ball.

Your clutching at straws there matey.

Clutching at straws???

You’ve just vindicated my point, it’s ALL about the quality of possession and very little to do with the amount.

I’m glad you agree with me, getting back to basics worked a treat last night.

You're right, it's about quality of possession, though you'll admit that generally speaking the individuals with more quality are also capable, when necessary, of holding onto the ball for longer.

The issue here isn't to reject a counter if it's on, but not to give the ball away cheaply when it isn't.

Quality possession can also exist in a defensive sense, i.e. as a way of preventing your opponent from hurting you by keeping the ball from them.

If you look at Guardiola's teams, they typically counter whenever they have the chance, and their high pressing often means doing so in very favourable circumstances. The thing is that they tend to win back the ball so high up the pitch that it isn't often considered a counter when in fact it is.
