I've added some statistical analysis on gem's thread, for all those people that have banged on about it all weekend but couldn't be bothered to look for some FACTS

I did appreciate the fact that you went to that trouble, GB. It was especially interesting to learn what actually constitutes a short pass - i.e. 25 yards or fewer.

How those passes are measured would be useful to know. And what happens in the event of a dispute over the length of a pass? If a pass is adjudged to be 25 yards, but is clearly 27 yards, for example, what is the appeals procedure, and who is the ultimate arbiter?

opta measure long balls not short balls (in theory gets to the same answer), and also for it to be a long ball it has to be played forward. so banging it side to side like a demented solbakken side doesn't count towards yr long ball stat!

In the month I was born we were unbeaten:

Wolverhampton Wanderers v Manchester United 6-2
Wolverhampton Wanderers v Newcastle United 2-0
West Bromwich Albion v Wolverhampton Wanderers 1-1
Wolverhampton Wanderers v Middlesbrough 3-3

I was born in the year that saw us start and end the season with a draw v spurs. notable year 71-72 - we got to our only European trophy final (to date), beat man united, arsenal, man city, league winners derby, west brom and best of all leeds united in the last league game to prevent them taking the title. we also finished as the highest place west midlands team in English football

one look at the scores through the year is a reminder of how much more competitive football was back then, and that with only 2 points for a win the league was also a lot closer.

The day I was born, Wolves lost 2-0 to Aldershot in the playoffs.

I was in the Algarve, Portugal, when that happened. Believe it or not, John Richards walked into the bar/ restaurant we were in, and he told me what he knew of the score. Was a disappointment. Another story that'll go into my never-to-be-published memoirs...
