Evening fellow Blues,
I've just done a little exercise on sponsorship deals to address this 'City are only funded by their 'sugar daddy' narrative.
Here's what I found:
Etihad UAE £30m / Nike US £12m (soon to be Puma Germany £50m) / Nexen South Korea £10m / DCT Abu Dhabi / Aabar Abu Dhabi / Etisalat UAE / Nissan Japan / SAP Germany / Hays UK / Techno Country? / Betsafe UK / Wix Israel / Qnet Hong Kong / UBtech China / Valvoline USA / Dsquared2 UK / Wega Germany / Hyperion US / Wolf Blass Australia / Heinekin Holland / IT Trader Holland / Eaton US / Goals Canada / Thomas Cook Sport UK / K8.com UK / Carlsberg Denmark / Dongqiudi China / BNN Canada / The Open UK / SHB UK / Mundipharma Singapore / Ballr Asia? / Star Lager Nigeria / Veqta India
So 3 Abu Dhabi and 1 UAE sponsor (it's a stretch but let's say the UAE is also in the pocket of the owner). So that's 4 sponsors from the owners homeland out of a total of 35 sponsors.
Apart from the main sponsors I can't find specific financial amounts directly attributed to any of the other sponsors but on the lists I've seen these always appear in the same order so I'm assuming they're listed in order of importance, i.e. sponsorship amount - that seems a reasonable assumption.
Therefore, Etihad £30m and the other 3 a maximum of £10m each. That's £50m.
So using the 2016 annual accounts the Abu Dhabi/UAE contribution to City's commercial income is 28% or just 13% of total revenue. These percentages would of course be even smaller for 2017.
I hope that puts it into perspective.
Like any commercial business, the owner bought it and invested massively in infrastructure and assets to generate enormous growth. It was even widely publicised at the time that they had originally intended a much slower 10 year investment plan but the introduction of FFP forced them to chuck money at the 'project' much quicker than planned.
That saw them just fall foul of FFP as the drawbridge came crashing down.
So we can thank all of the (old) 'elite' clubs who forced UEFA to accelerate FFP in a bid to stop City (and PSG I guess) joining their ranks. Without that acceleration, City would still be on their growth path rather than already having completed it.
So we have United and their partners in crime Arsenal, Bayern, Barc, Real, Milan, Inter etc to thank.
Exploding a myth?

Maybe its me, but PSG always seem to get an easy ride. FFP cost us big time. Scott Sinclair ffs.

FFP was aimed at City but I think it was derailed by the emegence of PSG.

Excellent post, not that it will matter as it’s an inconvenient truth.
Let them have their delusions and incorrect facts and theories it calms them and makes them feel better about themselves.
