It's not so much where the money comes from but rather what the owner's philosophy is (with all due respect to LVG).
Chelsea is Abramovich's train set. It's his hobby, and I honestly don't think he gives a shiyte about roi. But he does care about the football.
United is the Glazer's cash cow. They want a helathy balance sheet. They don't give a shiyte about the football.
City's owners want to establish a global profile for the UAE. They want an appreciating asset and they recognise that football is entertainment and that growth comes with entertaining football.

Why not both?

No reason, in fact we all want it. But trying to build a brand, a position in the football world, you need trophies, or at least finals.
But as just a fan I want entertainment first.

Apparently the driving force is Sorriano, who believes that football is up there with Netflix or Disney as a source of entertainment that the whole world watches. He also believes that most football clubs lack the breadth of vision to see that. So for example clubs like United have a huge global fan base, but make feck all money from most fans. Anyway the long and short of it is that entertainment is at the heart of it all.

Are you saying he sees City as a massive business opportunity?

Yeah. That’s why I am savouring every minute of the actual football that’s on the pitch.
