DPL vs Bristol Rovers and Northampton Town

As I’m not at home for Christmas, I am posting 2 DPLs.

The word “winnable" comes to mind when we play teams around us, although perhaps "drawable" might be a better description of the first match in Bristol. We shared a memorable occasion and an enjoyable game with the “The Gas" in Cardiff which is now 10 years ago. Their support was massive and they made it a very close match with over 59,000 there.

I might well have gone to Bristol had it not been on 23 December and I imagine that will apply to quite a lot of the away support. Perhaps we will get a report from Cheltenham who has not been as vocal as usual this season.

They seem a rather unpredictable team winning 3-0 one week at home (v Southend) and then losing 4-1 away at Gillingham. You might say that they are not consistent, so it might be sensible to predict a draw. So I will 2-2 (Marquis or May if he doesn’t play) and 7,600.

Northampton proved too much for us in Hassellbaink’s debut as their manager and since then, despite some setbacks, they have improved. Of course, they are not particularly consistent. But then you don’t really expect to see this quality in and around the bottom unless it is consistency of the continually bad kind. That they beat Walsall 2-1 at home in their last match will have helped them forget being thrashed by Oldham 5-1 a week earlier. We know what Walsall did to us too, don’t we? But we are at home and apart from the goal they got in the 5-1 which hardly counts they failed to score at all away from home on the previous 3 outings. So we had better win. And win 2-0 I hope (Marquis or May if he doesn’t play) and 8500.

Agree hound possibly the poorest side i have seen.
They did have a good spell were we were not keeping the ball to well but for once we scored goals at important times.
Garret mason butler were really good.
Baudry a bit flowery on some occasions.
26 good second half although to be fair to him i dont think he is 100%fit.
Rowe outstanding.
Marquis good but 1 or 2 near me were having a go at him.
May in my humble opinion was shocking but he got mom so i am wrong.
Now for me having the benefit of being there yesterday.Whiteman playing in Houghtons role was much more noticeable and positive than Houghton
He appeared to want the ball more and was on hand to help others out who were in trouble

There was quite a lot of abuse thrown at Marquis by people around me in the second half.
I have noticed this swell growing in recent matches and on Saturday, at times, it was almost Curtis Main like.

Agree about Whiteman Lanza.
Before the game I had said that I like him playing further up the pitch but against Northampton he was exactly as you described.

Changed my mind on MoM.
With the benefit of a bit more time to think about it I will pick Mason.

Judging by the numbers forecasting a win on the 26th, the collective spirit should be higher than for some time. The win on Saturday was not as convincing as we might have wished for, but it was effective in building confidence for the Northampton game. And its result was entirely satisfactory. The context was that Northampton had performed creditably against Blackburn a few days earlier and Bristol Rovers followed us up by getting a point away at Walsall. The win looked reasonably comfortable from the highlights and it was clearly more than adequate from the score. It is also true that although neither of our opponents are at the top of the numerous form tables which are produced nowadays they are not at the bottom of any of them either.

It is surprising to a non-statistician how rarely we manage to forecast the score, but perhaps not too difficult to understand when you compare it with the Result with just 3 options. The scorer has 10 plus subs, but sensibly we favour the more frequent ones, especially Marquis who lets more of us down more often than others in this particular respect. But keeping backing him shows that most of us know how hard he tries and puts himself in the right place.

So congratulations to Selby and Micky for anticipating the Copps goal and to Azzas, Small and full-size for being on the nail for the Bristol and the Northampton scores respectively.

Micky stays in front

The result proves we need to sort out the strikers. You cannot keep missing chances like we've been doing. I watched the practice before the game. All of the forwards and midfield players who get the chance to score, we were having shooting practice. Only Mandeville looked like he had any confidence. Right foot left foot, volleys, controlling then shooting, he probably put 8 out of 10 in the back of the net. Marquis n May were terrible, especially Marquis. Beeston looked hungry, Copps n Tommy did ok. Thing is, both M n M started yet keep on missing chances. Another thing that Marquis has started doing is moaning and giving abuse to other players for giving him a bad pass. Yet 3 times in the 2nd half if he'd of kept going for the ball instead of just stopping he'd of had 3 one on ones. Could do with a Ched Evens type of forward.

Having seen the whole match, how was the defending?

posted on 28/12/17

Don, the defending was excellent, as it has been for most of the season TBF.
Northampton didn’t really threaten us very often however but when they did attempt to get forward our lads snuffed out the threat quite easily.
Garret seems to be getting better with each game.
