Is Shearer stupid - ‘he’s touched him with his arm but it’s a contact sport’?!!! His arm is ACROSS him, therefore stopping him moving towards the ball. If I hold you back it doesn’t make you fall over but it stops you getting the ball so is a foul!!

My first thought at the game was pen and I was pretty much in line. Watched it back later and Shearer (never won a dodgy pen in his life) Linekar Reid and Murphy can talk all they like about it being a contact sport. We might not like it but in the modern game it’s a pen.

Anyway everyone ‘s happy. We are cos we won the bitters are cos they can complain they were robbed.

Coutinho - couldn’t agree more, pens are give for any against some you win some you lose. My issue is with the utter sheet Shearer is talking! The pen against Lovren was equally annoying - it was a pen, but I think the player moves towards Lovren so could easily have not been given - Shearer’s thoughts: definite pen no question about it!!

Refs seem to be giving pens these days for the same offences they would give free kicks for outside the box.

Now technically that’s fine if it’s consistent, a foul is a foul.

The problem is the severity of punishment of a penalty is not in keeping with the offence, especially if it’s given when people are not even in positions to shoot at goal. You can going away from goal in a crowded box, be touched on your back, fall over, and get a free shot at goal from 12 yards with only the keeper to beat as a result.

The punishment doesn’t fit the crime at all, so that needs to be looked at.
