Listen to Extricate the album he wrote after Brix left him for Nigel Kennedy in 1990. Magnificent piece of work full of hate and angst, most Fall fans prefer the earlier stuff but thats where its at for me.

Yeah I had a chat with my friend about the Fall, I think people like the idea of Mark E Smith as a character and all the stores of him drunk rather than The Fall themselves. Handful of alright songs but still 99% was poor.

Well, the proportions are more likely to be about 60:40 in the good:unlistenable ratio.

and the cult of personality created 'legend' is always more interesting than the reality

Don't get me wrong, there was a lot of bad stuff there. But such a huge canon of work allied to his mercurial talent means his scatter-gun approach would almost inevitably produce pure pearls. And, in his case, it did.
