Depression Taunts

Read this interview and to be honest it disgusts me. It disgusts me that folk think telling someone to hang themselves properly is just banter and part of the game.

This isn't name calling like "you are smelly" this is something that people genuinely suffer with.

I don't see this as any different from what Dean Shields has endured. It is for me the same as racism. You are targeting someone for their skin colour or disability.

Depression is a disability. Just because you don't see it doesn't mean it isn't there. Just because someone is a professional footballer or a high flyer in business does not mean they cannot suffer from it

More needs to be done to curtail the stigma and abuse of depression and PTSD

Not often I go on a rant but that interview really wound me up over what he has had to put up with on the pitch.

Few on here and I had a disagreement about the Dean Shiels incident, I've had a wee think about it and possible changed my view, still think it was unintentionally thoughtless and intended as a joke and done without fully considering the longer term effect it had on the player. You live, you learn.

With this guy, he knew what he was doing when he revealed the depth of his despair, that he was opening himself up to the abuse, trying to educate folk, like me that haven't experienced depression, and its inevitable that, yes, he will educate some but he is also giving ammo to others, people are horrible.

The fact this discussion is happening shows we've come along from "2 Andy Gorams".

Lurker

Read your post and you captured how I felt a few years back.....numb and zombie like, with no way out of a bleak, low mood!

Counselling, talking about it, even on here, running, cycling, Mindfulness relaxing techniques, and anti-depressants got me through it, plus a personal faith.

Anytime any of you guys need a chat, just post!

Call Sign

Hats off for the OP, and to David Cox for standing up to ignorant coqs..

Male suicide is the big killer of males under fifty, and how many blokes keep it bottled up, or hit the bottle, drugs or other blokes?

Good to talk, and when I did discuss depression in 2014, many girls, women and guys I know opened up and admitted their dark moods etc.

When he phoned work to say I was diagnosed with moderate depression I felt sick, ashamed and thought I would get grief from colleagues.

Far from it, and you find out how sound most people are when you talk about such personal matters, honestly.

tbab Mate, I was on that same thread as you a few weeks back. I don't drink cos it is one of the worst things someone with depression can do. A skin full of drink always resulted in multiple days of low mood to follow. I do lots of gym work, walk and run loads and swim regularly too and of course working five days a week is a big distraction too. I am actually not been too bad for a few months now but you just never know when it is going to hit you. But i have dealt with it for many years and learned too from my experience with it.
I have never been afraid or embarrassed to talk about it, many are and hiding it away from family friends is the worst thing anybody can do.

Cheers for the comment mate and sharing your experience with it.

Cheers guys. When I look around me at the world I see far worse off folks than ourselves. Depression aside there is much to be thankful for.

Lurker, well done you 👏 you’re an example to us all in how to deal with adversity. You’re dealing with it remarkably well and taking all the right steps to recover from that horrible illness

Take care bud. Keep going and never give up 👍
