Every time I read something by the Birmingham Mail I cringe. This is a perfect example:
They sit top of the Championship, 13 points ahead of the nearest contender for one of the two automatic promotion spots.
So we are 13 points clear of Cardiff ten are we?

It does make sense.
The nearest "contender" for one of the top two promotion spots (i.e. a club that isn't currently in either 1st or 2nd), is Fulham, and we are 13 points clear of them.
